I personally think tuomisto is the most ready for what would be asked of him which is third pair stay at home defenseman.

I agree with CRD, Tuomisto for sure. We do need to find out what we have with him as an NHL D, especially since he was our 2nd round pick 6 years ago. He plays consistently and solidly that he might just be the next big stay at home bottom pair D
Wallinder - I'm unsure what exactly has happened but I speculate something mentally has been lifted off of him. Still some warts here and there but he's looking like he's been let off of a leash, of sorts. Great to see, and I hope he dials in that consistency then shines down the stretch to the playoffs
Buium needs more time. Definitely want him to get faster, more physical, and be a shooting threat. He'll likely get PK duties next season and potentially rotate in and out of the top pair

Right now? Tuomisto definitely has the chance to supplant Holl
Wallinder and Buium are younger and are not as refined defensively. The NHL game is much faster and more physical where Tuomisto looks polished enough that he could actually look like he belongs, and send Holl to the press box
This does weigh in on if Holl gets traded or waived, and when Petry returns. I know that Detroit keeps a tightly knitted group in Grand Rapids so a Tuomisto call up is hard to picture actually happening

After 1st, GR 0 - Manitoba 1, shots 16-4 GR. Moose scored early, Buium literally in sleep. Weak play along the boards, turn over, net front empty and 1-0.
Danielson zone entries 3/4. GR had one PP, i like how Mazur operates in the front of the net, close and moves where ever the puck is. Constant screen. Tuomisto shot the post, i think Lombardi had the rebound, don't know how that didn't go in. Becher needs to work his skating, couple times it look like 12-year old was skating out there. Tuomisto plays it simple, still not sure about that speed. Wallinder looked a bit invisible but thats not necessary a bad thing for d-man.

GR 0 - Moose 3, shots 27-12 GR, after 2nd. Campbell tried to get the puck moving, weird bounce and straight to the Moose player, 2-0. 3-0 on PP, shot directed in. GR has totally controlled the game, 2 mistakes and 1 bounce and Moose is leading by 3. Bad luck or curse?
Wallinder looked more noticeable, couple good defensive plays. Used his reach on both and one bad play, slept in the slot and Moose almost scored. One of the very few situations Moose actually created.

5-2 loss. They got goalied. Moreso though bad defensive errors/lapses/turnovers that result in goals against. Been killing them an extra bit lately

• Creative plays with the puck opening space for himself and for Watson behind his net during their first shift. Next shift on the PP they tried a new cross ice neutral zone entry and Danielson came with a head of steam, beat the D and Divincentis got the far side blocker on the shot. Same PP he walked right in and wired one off the goalie's helmet it appeared
Reading play he anticipated the Moose to breakout and instead intercepted and fed a drop pass to Wallinder and it sustained more zone time and 2 more shots on goal
Mazur: A
• PP chances trying to tuck it in from Debrincat's spot. He spends time as a screen and timing when and where he goes if he doesn't have the puck. Quite like Cat does
Got a great tip chance off Shine's interception and pass, then he sends it bouncing through the goal mouth
Another nice tip chance, gets rebound but still denied both times
Ripped a one-timer that might have gone off the end of the toe of his stick, just wide. Next PP he got all of a one-timer but fires it over the net, out of play. Same PP, Lombardi worked a pass to him in the Cat spot, did a little spinning soft pass of the goalie's paddle to Shine alone in the slot and Divincentis ROBBED him with the glove

• Showing willing and successful aggressive play closing down his man's space along the boards and on the rush, picked off a pass too and sent the puck deep for line 4 to forecheck on it
Very involved offensively and showing signs of life again lately in that regard
Trouble accurately finding passing options in the neutral zone on a breakout a couple times
Erroneous pinch where he missed the bouncing puck caused a 2 on 1 against that nearly resulted in a goal
Near game's end, he caught a faceoff win and then did a real sick behind the back pass to himself in tight space, then twisted back at the blueline and put the puck deep on a soft dump. Ultimately, that same zone keep landed him getting the puck a couple more times including a smart pass opening himself up at the blueline to feed Hanas for what looked like a wild dangle and goal

20 seconds into the game he tried to avoid the physical play and instead chip the puck past the oncoming forechecker behind his net and comes up with nothing, and that player gains full possession and sends the puck in front to an unchecked man. 1-0 Moose
Got a clean shot high slot but resulted in a routine blocker save
Tuomisto: B-
• Good work keeping gaps at the defending blueline
Rocketed one off the post to which Lombardi someone couldn't clean up at the side of the net
On a 3rd period 2 on 1 he had plenty space to keep defending but got outpaced and couldn't pivot fast enough but still tried to and made a terrible looking lunge as the player beat him to feed the puck through him and then the other Moose deked Campbell out. Should have just laid down...
Becher: B+
• Good breakout route to receive a pass and as he entered the offensive zone he saw Hanas breaking in but his pass didn't have enough mustard on it to get to him before being picked off
Passes weren't as buttery as they have been
Managed to break in off left wing and get a good snap off the goalie's pad
Defensive pressure causing plays to go back the Griffins way. Made a nice read to break up a 4 on 2 at the end of the Griffs PP and it started a 2 on 1 where the pass went behind Wallinder who jumped in the play

@Our Lady Peace They seem to be getting scored on more lately. Curious if it is the defense or the goaltending?
I see Cossa has gone from a .920 SV% on the season down to .913 SV%, and is sub.900 SV% in 5 of his last 7 games. Not sure if he is in a slump, or the defense is hanging him out to dry, or some bad luck.
Curious to get your thoughts.

Defense:
Rafferty has been the worst defensively lately, directly causing turnovers or missing coverage. Viro has trouble with decisions and unsuccessful zone clears and results in continued defensive shifts. Collectively the team is allowing too many odd-man rushes against, and the net front coverage has been porace. Overcommitting or being lazy/unaware of the man in the high danger areas has resulted in an unacceptable amount of goals against. Sadly the goalie's haven't been bailing them out unlike what seems every other goalie they play against does for the team in front of them
Goalies:
Cossa has been slumping a little bit with regards to getting his weaknesses exploited, which is primarily his glove hand. His positioning is mostly correct, but he can still get sniped on his glove. Few games lately he's let in a few backbreaking softies where he misreads the play. Hasn't been terrible though overall, he just needs to clean those up and lock it down before playoffs. He should not be called up to Detroit
Husso was quite solid for the most part, but some games he'd look bad. Campbell was a bit better earlier on but now looks super rusty letting in bad goals and he's been getting hung out to dry too

They battled it out, 3-2 SO win! Basically 4 minutes to finish regulation on the PK after allowing the 2-2 goal on the 5 on 3. That was a hell of a PK, all systems working on that one

• Got his stick on a breakout pass and then Snively tipped it and Danielson did a sweet little set drop pass back to him and then fed Nate right in front who didn't make clean contact and it missed the net. He does need to get better at finishing, no doubt. The thing I'm not too worried about is that he's getting many chances at it, consistently. By the sheer volume he will learn to finish better. If he wasn't getting chances often or relies solely on teammates to get them to him, I'd be concerned
...That same shift, he times his route perfectly to come and get his stick down on the open Moose player in front who gets the puck, but could no longer elevate the shot or make a deke, and Cossa easily swallows it up
Should have had an assist on a BS call that took back what would've been Hanas' 2nd of the night. Got it back the next shift though on the Snively goal!

Excellent pad save through traffic off Lambert on the last PK in regulation
He did what he needed to do, and stuck it out in regulation. Nice all-around game by Big Hoss

• Didn't amount to much, except poking the puck in front onto the goalie as he was falling down.
He needs to be more assertive with what he's doing with the puck on the PP. Kinda telegraphs his passes. He does need to work on his shot and willingness to shoot from distance too
In OT, he had a clean 2 on 1 break from his own zone with Watson and put the pass too far ahead of him in the neutral zone and killed the play. You HAVE to get that to his stick

• Good body position on his man for loose pucks and getting he stick either on the puck, or as leverage on his man
Lambert tried to dance him and Wallinder played it really well and took the body to separate man from puck. Lambert is slippery though he swung a pass right through the crease that just missed a Moose coming in
He's been forcing defensemen to make moves on him or to go into the corners with him but he's been confident in deciding what his next move is, instead of flailing and hoping for the best. That was the worst
Walked in all alone as the Moose completely miscommunicated and had a breakaway but Kakkonen managed to come up big. Moose went the other way and he made a key poke to redirect a pass away from a wide open Moose in a 2 on 1 situation. Then actually did a diving play to block a cross crease pass 30 seconds later at the end of a shift!

• Stick check + maintain body position is his go-to for defense. I like this, but he will need to get faster. Otherwise, go the Tuomisto route and get physical to compensate for lack of acceleration and top speed
Showing willingness to shoot as they seem to use him as a trigger man on the PP1. That's how he got his 1st yesterday and with continued reps that will be a great weapon to add to his sneaky puck skills, vision, and passing
