Prospect Info: Grand Rapids Griffins, 2024 - 2025 Season

Big comeback win! Griffins came alive in the 3rd as Moose dominated most of the first two periods and scored 4 unanswered goals

After a few shifts hey moved Mazur off the top line down to the 3rd line switching with Gettinger

Danielson: B+
• Pretty quiet offensively. Great defensively. Him and Buium link up here and there, often in tight space, and their skill/IQ together is so apparent when they do. They're gonna show up even better on the scoresheet when they're surrounded by actual NHL talent. Finished a few checks today playing notably more physical in that regard

Mazur: A-
• I'll say, he was quite noticeable and it seemed like he wasn't even trying all game lol. No adjustment time needed. Smart player. When needed, he was getting to the hard areas like the boards and net front. Wins puck battles and can make a quick play off of it

Such nice pace to the game, you can see that he'd be knocking hard for a callup had he played the full season thus far. He was all over the Rafferty goal shift, almost effortlessly, and made a slick pass to keep the blueline, then eventually a swift pass to start the goal play. 3rd assist there

Big shot block when the game was 5-3 with 5 mins left. Shortly after has a grade-A scoring chance but shot it just over the net

Wallinder: A-
• Good on the first two PKs, he was actually battling and getting body position in front better too. Nice job playing the man when defending the rush. He was getting quite a few looks in the offensive zone and they were good reads by him to get them. Having trouble handling passes but did make the most of his plays

I noticed he was taking better looks when under pressure and sending the puck up the boards from his zone

Buium: A+
• Best player in the game. This is not the first time either lately, he continues to play damn good hockey. Talk about adjusting to pro hockey... I have eaten all the crow on this kid...

Where do I start? Great reads to start a breakout. Good at maintaining pressure along the boards, particularly with skating and keep his stick active when the player changes directions on him

He has excellent vision with the puck, and he showcased that in particular to catch Becher dropping back for his eventual shot and goal. Nice feed to Doucet who fed Rafferty for the goal very shortly after. So many plays he starts by feeding the high forward or even carrying down low himself

Becher: A-
• He was really good with his decisions and handling of the puck. Made a great read to drop into the high slot and fire home a one-timer goal. He was good defensively around his net too

EDIT: they changed the 2nd Buium assist to Mazur
Thank you for these breakdowns they are much appreciated. I don't watch many GR games so I love reading these from people that do.

Early in the season... It was:

Watson 3 points in 2 AHL games, and promoted up. (very soon send down)
Kasper scoring 2 points in 2 AHL games - called up. Never looked back.

Then there was a looong break....
Söderblom scoring 3+3=6 points at 5 AHL games - called up.
Shine the team leading AHL scorer - signing NHL contract.

So go out and score. That's the way up to NHL at current Red Wings organization.

Play yourself out from the busleague shithole.

What if you play really well and don't score, but you can see the potential and continue to get A ratings?

Is it that bad? Are the players treated that poorly?

The hockey world has made huge strides (heh) in the skating department. A lot more knowledge is available for guys to modify their stance and a lot more skating coaches around too. He can make improvements if he gets the right guidance and has the willingness to do so.
100% agree. I would actually disagree that skating is the most difficult aspect of the skill required to develop. Leaving aside fast twitch/slow twitch anatomy and physiology, many examples of players who have improved their skating. Luke GLendening is one. Raymond and Larkin could always skate. However, they were also easy to knock off their feet. That isn't the case today. Soderblom has clearly improved his skating. Heck, every player in the AHL (and other leagues) that makes the NHL, will see their skating improve. Watch Danielson, MBN, even ASP. Of course, Cleveland is working on jet pack like explosion at CC.

The good thing is that, in an absolute sense, everyone's skating does improve. The downside, however, is that everyone's skating improves. It isn't enough to just improve your skating, You need to make outsized gains to actually make any true developmental progress. This is easier said than done.

The other big issue is that athleticism will always be a limiting factor when it comes to skating. You can be a great technical skater, but if you lack explosiveness, you will always struggle no matter how much technical improvement you may have made. In scouting I think athleticism is far more important to identify. I would rather try to improve the mechanics of a superior athlete than make someone more athletic.

Skating is the hardest physical thing to improve upon at this point in the development curve unfortunately.
With regards to Buium, I think the fact that he’s 6’3 and has good IQ/anticipation makes up a lot for his skating not being plus level.

I also don’t think his skating is nearly as bad as someone like Tuomisto.

Getting spicy! Bantle just scored on a breakaway and some idiot on Rockford gave him a whack with his stick a second after the puck went in, Seger comes in to stand up for Bantle, Rockfords goalie gets involved trying to goon it up, and Cossa comes all the way down the ice since Rockfords goalie was being a punk. It looked like we were about to have a full on brawl with Cossa coming all the way down, but not much ended up happening. At minimum, our boy Cossa isn't afraid to get involved!
Two guys on each team each received two for roughing and both goalies got 2 for leaving the crease. Hoping someone on Rockford gets their face punched in soon.
