Getting hired by the Sabres requires meeting three criteria:

1. "Qualiified"
2. Who Terry is willing to hire.
3. Who is willing to take the job.

Under the circumstances I think Lindy is fairly close to the top of the list. To your point, under Pegula I think one of the better options for permanently getting this sinking ship afloat is likely Ruff as HC and back into the playoff regularly. Followed by a "retirement' or "promotion" to President of Hockey Ops to shield the franchise from its owner.
Wouldn't it be

1. Economic
2. Efficient
3. ???????
4. Profit

I need to know more on what is going on with Ellis. If it's Lindy coming aboard, it makes sense to keep Ellis around. If they are going to conduct a new search, it makes zero sense why he is here.

I also don't think you fire Donny this quickly if you are just going to promote Appert.
Ellis has been involved in the organization long enough that he is probably well liked. I think they put him back in player development and wait let him work his way back up again. That said, he probably should have been fired.

I know this flies in the face of that "NHL Veteran Coach" (TM) but I'd be open to Matt Carle. Someone will give him an NHL job, and the guy just wins. Two straight NCAA National Championships, has coached the Team USA World Juniors, I believe he played with Okposo at Stattuck-St. Mary's as well, and his brother Matt played in the NHL for years.

I'd rather have him than most retreads like Todd McLellan, Dean Evason, Jay Woodcroft, or Gerard Gallant. Definitely not Boudreau - look how Vancouver improved when they replaced Bruce with Tocchet.

Appert doesn't make sense, but the same Lindy as HC and Appert as assistant makes more sense.

I'm hoping we get a veteran coach.. I think Randy Carlyle would be super beneficial for our Young Mega ceiling Defensemen

Bruce Boudreau another veteran coach

Both Carlyle and Boudreau have winning experience with young cores

Bring both in. Randy for D and Bruce for Offense

I guess Pegula is willing to eat Granato’s contract.

Some folks will need to recalibrate their narratives
Pencil me in as someone who thought Tpegs would balk at the idea of paying an out of work coach. I am genuinely shocked that Adams pulled the trigger today. Now i am bracing for the Appert hire and hoping i am wrong about that too.

It’s not that Evason is my favorite, but didn’t the Wild make the playoffs with him without having a top 6 C. But I like Berube, he recently won cup, St. Louis played the kind of hockey that Now it would be nice to instill in Buffalo, they also had 2-3 young players playing well. Or maybe Lindy.

Curious if he moves back down to Rochester in some capacity?

I don't know, it is strange.

I feel that each coach had a different role, and were hired for different reasons.

Just looking at their history or labeling them something, seems like the wrong thing to look at them for. Each of them weren't brought in with the same task at hand.

In terms of accomplishing what they were brought in for:

Granato - A - Brought in to change the culture and attitude of the players and correct course with some players floundering. I felt he did that. I don't think Adams and Pegula saw him coaching them to win and make the playoffs. I think he accomplished what he was hired to do. I also think he wore out to a point, and they may have stuck with him longer than they should've. But I think he performed the best at what was needed from him. Just, it was time to move on.

Nolan - B+ - Brought in to establish a work ethic of a foundation to be built upon. Based on how the players played, I think he accomplished what he needed to do.

Housley - D- Brought in to change the culture and attitude of the players. I felt he failed at this, and the honeymoon with his coaching probably lasted the shortest time of the coaches hired.

Krueger - F - Brought in to correct the course with the relationship of the players. This probably lasted a little bit, but at the end of the day, things got a lot worse with him around. I'm not sure what he actually accomplished.

Bylsma - Incomplete (what is lower than F- ) Brought in to build upon what Nolan accomplished. Massive failure. Can't get much lower than a coach not interested in engaging with the players and actually doing his job.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Adams and Granato both report to Pegula? I thought I remembered the org chart not having Adams as Granato's "boss" but maybe I'm conflating the Bills' setup. Curious how that might inform how the firing actually went down.

Pretty sure the owner would want to hear from the GM about whether they should stick around.

I really liked Granato. I thought he was a breath of fresh air after the dark ages of RK. Granato brought a lot of our players out of their slump/arrested development and up to the next level of play. I appreciated Granato's enthusiasm, especially in his first full year on the job. You could tell he was excited and loving the opportunity. I really hoped he could take us to the next level and earn that contract extension. It's not at all surprising that he reached his ceiling, but it is sad. I could tell he was having a hard time this season because he no longer sounded enthusiastic in interviews. He sounded defensive and lost. It was the right move.

I am not into a Lindy retread. Or Appert. I am not interested in McKee or Peca or whoever else used to wear a sabres jersey. I want someone with proven success that runs a tight ship and makes players work in practice and holds them accountable on the ice. We'll see who we get, but i am not holding my breath for the latter.
