Really finding it hard to see how anyone can reasonably say it’s anything below a B, for me it’s an easy A.

No term, nobody signed over 1m. Addressed specific needs with players who fit those needs. Rebuilt the depth that was lost with next to no cap space available and there’s enough depth now we don’t have to put Othmann or Cullye or the other kids in a position where they have to make the roster even if they’re not ready yet like so often happened under Gorton.
are they better than they were last season?

Just because they did what they could; because of the situation they created; doesn’t mean it was good. If my nephew makes me macaroni art, maybe it’s a good effort using Barilla and Elmers Glue, but it’s not going in the MOMA

The opening night lineup for this upcoming season will 100% be better than the opening night roster last season. I’m pretty bullish on Laviolette making positive changes to this group as well. So for me, yes, they are better than they were last season.

did a decent job adding depth without overpaying....i have absolutely no idea who mackey and broulliard are

You are entitled to your opinion but I do not agree with you. Somehow we’ve got older and slower. We lost because we couldn’t skate with fast teams and they don’t nothing whatsoever to solve that. They going to be chasing shadows all year .you don’t compare this to last year opening day. You compare to to how they ended the season. That’s the level they need to get back to. They didn’t upgrade anyone in FA that left/wasn’t brought back. I think the people giving this As and Bs are kind of delusional, but I wished I shared the optimism.

ultimately, I’m most concerned with what we do with Laf and KAM. If we sign them, the deals are very important. While these depth pieces are nice, they’re little more than filler for the season. How we maneuver with Laf and KAM this year and Kakko and Chytil next year are the truly important things.

There is no question they are better. Cuylle will make this team, maybe Jones also. No need for Goodrow and Vesey in top 6. No scrubs like Carpenter, Hajek, Kravtsov, Harpur, Reaves, Leschyshyn etc. The only position they may have taken a slight step backward is backup goalie but we will see.

Laf and Miller are likely both going to get 2 year bridge deals for 6.5 mil between them.

How did they get slower? Is Wheeler slower than Tarasenko or an injured Kane? Is Gustafsson/Jones slower than Harpur? Is adding Cuylle to the roster not adding speed? I don't get the bullshit we got slower narrative.

I gave Drury an A. Whenever we went bargain bin shopping, we'd pull a libor hajek meets ben harpur meets carpenter meets Greg McKegg. I wanted him to weaponize the little space he has using the allure of winning a cup in the big Apple.

Realistically, we needed about 7 mil to resign Miller and Laf. I think Laf goes for 2.1x 2 mil and Miller for 4.5 x 3. I didn't expect us to have depth starting off the year. Last year, our bottom six looked abysmal until the tdl and the years prior as well.

The team is slower but think of it this way: you want a speedster with the iq of a chestnut or a guy slow as molasses who can complete a pass? Gus, btw, isn't that bad a skater and stepped into 2nd pairing minutes this season and more than handled his own. He is like pandora's box, you have no clue what you are going to get (and I hope it isn't darkness) .The battle between him and Jones should bring the best out of each other.

I also think Lavoliette and his crew are an enticing draw to players around the league, location aside. It's a great mix of forward thinking paired with the experience of an actual cup win.

For a point per $, I think Wheeler will exceed the value and then some. I also expect him to be on the 2nd line until the tdl. You can be upset, but he is the 2nd best rw we have, even as a dinosaur.

I like competition. I hate rushing the kids. People forget Drury is still relatively new to being a GM and for the most part, recognizes the issues and tries to fix his own mistakes instead of riding it out.

Biggest news this week was libor hajek being cut. I also hope Harpur never touches the ice again.

If Wheeler& Quick flop after the Kane travesty - Drury needs to be fired .

Im betting they both smell …

Today was a D

I was genuinely surprised by the veteran signings and the cost. Quick, Bonino, Wheeler and Gustafsson for under $4MM is quite a haul. The market is certainly softer than I expected and Wheeler in particular is a great signing. The experts who think he can’t skate anymore didn’t watch much hockey last year.

I saw Quick play 4-5 games in Vegas and was surprised at how good he looked. One was a shutout against Carolina and he looked terrific.
It’s nice to - for once - see a rangers front office ahead of the curve on market valuations. Drury clearly read the tea leaves right this time.

Compared to last year's opening night:
Forwards, they've traded Kravtsov, Carpenter and Reaves for Wheeler, Bonino and Pitlick. That's 3 upgrades, not considering Cuylle and Othmann.
On defense, they swapped Jones for Gustafsson and/or better Jones. Again, positive.
Backup goalie I'll give a wash, because they're inherently inconsistent.

Everyone is a year older, but there's as many guys for whom that should be a good thing as there are where it's a bad one.

Wheeler was a good move. Gustafsson was probably a good move, but haven't seen enough to qualify the move as "good" instead of "decent."

Quick over Halak, hard to say. Halak was the better goalie but $$. Quick was better with Vegas but small sample size.

Most of the other moves were complete crap and I'm concerned that the "depth" options will yet again end up mixing into the top 6 and taking time away from our prospects. I will continue to think this until this organization shows a general mindset of not putting top prospects in stupid motivational "competitions" with career plugs for training camp and washed up former third liners, then taking those competitions so seriously as to play the plugs over the kids.

Imagine if the 2005-06 Penguins had pretended like Sidney Crosby vs. Lasse Pirjeta was a real competiton..

Again, people can be u sure about someone like Gustafsson or Quick but the situation this offseason necessitated bargains. None of these players are going to be perfect. They took less than $1m each!

Even if Gustafsson can’t play defense, he scored 40 points last year in the NHL. If that’s your #7 for $800k that’s a win!

A - for the signings regarding the players & terms/cap ramifications.

C to Inc. - for the roster structure and what the players impact will be on the team.

I’m not a fan of Bonino. He’s cooked. Quick will be serviceable and if Halak was too expensive there could be much worse options out there. I like the Gustafson add for depth but not too familiar with the player. Wheeler basically just asked to be a Ranger, hard to turn that down but what it will mean for the system, team speed and how it affects the developing forwards may become a problem.

I can’t complain. Wheeler makes it a great day

Depth signings adds competition

Doesn’t block Jones or Cuylee from making the team imo . Easily can clear Belize and Harpur down to the AHL If this coaching staff wants too

Quick took little to come to NY . Other backups got over 1 million. Caps tight so had to go this route and there’s AHL depth in G
