Yzerman or Gorts?

As of this vote, Yzerman has exactly as many rings from being a GM as Gorton.

He signed on with Tampa after they had both Stamkos and Hedman.

The 2018 roster he just abandoned has several former Rangers this board was either mixed on, or couldn’t wait to be rid of.

Let’s at least proceed at school zone speeds before we proclaim his superiority.
Yeah but he did get hedman kucherov and stammer to all sign at under market vlaue...mcd too. Some really great contracts for that club.

Of course there's also some atrocious ones too.

I think he’s done a good job of assembling a team on paper, but the jury is still on whether he built a championship team. We’ve noted numerous times that TB has never captured that team of destiny look and it continues to bite them in the ass.

But the fact of the matter is that things become a wee bit easier when you have two elite players, both under the age 21, already on the roster as you walk in the door.

That’s not a throwaway fact that we can just overlook.

That’s great he signed them to below market deals, but they were still there in the first place.

The Rings argument reminds me of when some said Hasek wasn't great because he didn't have a ring.

This idea of yzerman absolutely bending gorton over in trades is outrageous.

The msl trade got us to the cup final and the team would never of made it that far without him. I'd make that trade 10 times out of 10.

The mcd trade based on what Karlsson trade was a home run. And I'd say even more then a win in either direction.

Gorton has a plan and is following it and will continue to rebuild this team to a contender. Based on his track record in boston when he was AGM and interim GM I have the faith hell get us there.

Hasek had a track record of excellence despite his team.

Lil' Stevie's track record tends to be teams that often did not look like the sum of their parts.

So, just a wee bit of a difference there.

I understand the topic, but I feel it`s not necessary to judge Jeff on one particular trade with Ryan Mc. and compare the two GM`s is not fair in my opinion towards Jeff.

I`m actually very pleased with Jeff Gorton GMìng, and glad that Spooner got a new contract here among other things since he played so well for us end of last season, and a similar situation for Hayes glad he got that one year contract at least to see him for another season here since he played so well too. I`m optimistic that Hayes improve this year concerning overall production, because his development was great end of last season as well.

It's also worth noting that Yzerman has some 8.5 years of being a GM to gauge, compared to about 3.5 for Gorton.

The reason I posted the thread wasnt to judge the 2 GMs based on the McD trade, it was because Yzerman just stepped down as GM of the Lightning.

Yes well I read it earlier - I really like what Yzerman did with Tampa hence my vote on him, and he did a very good job there both with their farm and their current team.

Can we accurately discern whether Yzerman would be a significant enough improvement over Gorton to offset the turmoil caused by firing the GM on the drop of a hat?

IMO, no. Stick it out with Gortsy.

Yzerman inherited Stamkos and Hedman. Two of the most important building blocks in hockey are an elite high end franchise center and an elite high end franchise defenseman.

That will be the most important task for Gorton, especially the former. We could sign Panarin and Karlsson but we won't win a Cup until we fill that giant hole up the middle. Richards/Stepan/Brassard just wasn't good enough. Great depth but we were lacking that one true gamebreaker that would have put us over the top....

....That said, just compare the state of the franchise from when we got obliterated by the Penguins in 2016 to now. We had an aging core with bad contracts and no prospects other than Buchnevich, Skjei and Shestyorkin.

In two short years Gorton has gotten us out of cap hell and built one of the best young cores in the league. I can't wait to see where we are a year from now if we can add our first top 5 draft pick in OVER 20 YEARS and the progression of Buchnevich, Skjei, Andersson, Chytil, Howden, Hajek in the organization and hopefully bringing Kravstov over.

Plus we are still owed a pick from Tampa. And we should get some nice futures too if we trade Zuccarello, Spooner, Namestnikov, etc.
