Fantasy land thread but we are all bored waiting on hockey. I realize its probably a given that Stevie Y ends up replacing Holland as Detroit's GM. However, given a choice between Gorts and Yzerman, who would you want as GM of the Rangers? I like Gorts and think he's been doing a good job on this rebuild. I think Yzerman is on another level though. The moves he made in Tampa were amazing. I'm not trying to say I want Gorton fired. Just curious as to what everyone thinks. I'd take Yzerman in a heartbeat.

Gorton. As well as Yzerman has done, his teams have yet to win a cup. How much of his drafting success should be attributed to his scouts? In NY, he wouldn't have the advantage of no state income tax, so he'd have to give players closer to market value.

There's no guarantee that he would do well here. I'd rather stick with the devil I know. Gorton's plan has just begun. Let's see where it goes.

Gorton took Boston through a rebuild and won a cup. He's moving us in the right direction towards that. I know Stevie is a stickler on trades but come on now. Despite a lot of what you may see on this site, we have a very well regarded GM. And not old-timer regarded like our last one. Keep the faith in him.

Yzerman based on drafting
I saw a post on the main boards a few months ago (so take this with a grain of salt) that Yzerman is good friends with the Moosejaw GM and that they exchange tips on players. The poster’s examples were there was an import kid moosejaw took (forgetting who) based on Yzerman’s info and then I think the other guy gave a details of info about Point. Could be why they’ve done so well with the WHL, could be just a fun story, but kind of interesting either way

I don't know if I can answer this, because we still don't have enough evidence.

Yzerman has produced some great regular season teams. But if that's all they are, no one will remember his work 10 years from now.

Gorton is just starting to enter the time frame for which he will be judged. It's hard to judge him yet.

Yzerman has Stamkos and Hedmen, if that doesn't change the conversation completely, I don't what does.

But what if Gorton ends up with Hughes, plus the ensemble we have today, plus an additional couple of first rounders in 2019? Well, that could change things.

There's a perception by some that Yzerman schooled Gorton, and that's fueled some strong sentiments about TB.

But I don't know if I buy into that.

The reality is that the MSL helped propel the Rangers to their first cup appearance in a generation, whereas the Callahan contract has become exactly what some of us said it would --- an albatross once you got past the first couple of years.

Furthermore, I firmly believe that Gorton got the max value, or damn near close to, when he dealt McD to Tampa. I think we continue to see that takeaway reflected in the market since that time.

So right now, my vote would be for an option that doesn't exist --- too soon to tell.

For all the talk about Yzerman's drafting, Gorton was at the top of some incredible drafting in Boston, and one of the best UFA signings of our times. Also, speaking of trades, moving Raycroft for Rask was an absolutely ridiculous win, on par with any of Yzerman's best moves.

I think they're very close if you look at Gorton here and in Boston. We'll know a lot more about his work here, good or bad, in the next few years though.

Yzerman and it's not even close.

He's managed to build a contender while Gorton dismantled one without doing anything to ever supplement it.

Yzerman wins most of his trades especially when it comes to dealing with Gorton.

Also, while some are just giving credit to SY's scouting staff they fail to forget who picks out their scouting staff.

As GM..Once you have your game plan set you pick your scouting staff to follow suit.

Gorton has a scouting staff that values goalies in the 2nd round and picks mediocre prospects that haven't even spent their entire JR career playing the same position.

Stevie Y all day every day..

Al Murray is responsible for a lot of TB's success. Yzerman is responsible for hiring Al Murray. Going forward, I think you have to ask yourself whether Yzerman has another Murray in his pocket. For that matter, does Murray (or whomever Yzerman would bring in for scouting and development) have another Tyler Johnson in his pocket? IIRC he watched Johnson grow for a pretty good while before he got him to come to Tampa.

Why comparing these two out of all 31 GMs? Did Gorton not have a big say in those early 2010 Torts teams that also led to the early AV teams that had the success?

I always pictured Gorton as the director and Sather as the producer before JG officially became GM.

Yzerman won't be there to manage the team when the window is closing and draft picks/youth are scarce from the aftermath of the team he built (and did a great job of building, of course)

JG is now rebuilding the club. It's easy to bash him now.

If Yzerman does go to Detroit, he can certainly impress by building them back up.

Yzerman did a fantastic job of building up a great scouting staff and they've been able to build a fantastic core group of players. However, beyond that, I've been kind of bearish on his overall prowess as a GM.

That doesn't explain Kutcherov and the numerous Russian and other European players that they have drafted and or signed though

As of this vote, Yzerman has exactly as many rings from being a GM as Gorton.

He signed on with Tampa after they had both Stamkos and Hedman.

The 2018 roster he just abandoned has several former Rangers this board was either mixed on, or couldn’t wait to be rid of.

Let’s at least proceed at school zone speeds before we proclaim his superiority.
