Gretzky has lived more of his life as yankee than as a Canadian. He's not red and white. He's red, white and blue. Plus, he appears to be siding with the guy who keeps questioning our sovereignty over our nation, and I have harsh words that would end up deleted (and rightfully so) for him over that.

Gretzky is too old to have doing serious stuff for team Canada as it is rare you get an old guy able to put in the long days and hours reviewing scouting and various things to be knowledgeable to assemble a team. So I agree he is old and has little value to canada as a hockey Canada management person at his age.
But I will always love wayne. Maybe he had trouble getting a jersey in he has had knee issues in the past and a lot of pain is his body. Being in his 60s now and without knowing about anything I won't judge his motives for why you didn't put on a jersey or why he was also nice to the US.
If I was at the game I would not have been mean to the US, other than when the puck drop and play began, or after they lost then I make fun of them because it is sport.

Wayne has spent the last 35 years of his live growing hockey in america for the Game OVERALL, the success of the lower US teams, the influx of young exciting american players is all driven by gretzky going to LA and being an ambassador for hockey, not one country over another. Professional athletes shouldnt even disclose their political affiliations in my opinion, micheal jordan said it best when he wouldnt endorse a democrat "republicans buy shoes too"
and the constant ozempic commercials ignoring all the well documented health risks associated with it

Just curious. How does having knee issues restrict a person from putting a jersey on?
We can't go into anything much here because the main attack on Wayne I can see if really in the realm of politics.
When he was younger people would all say he was a great guy and many things about him.
People forget he is an old man now. Did he hear about other greats doing much as a senior not really they showed up at a game waved dropped a puck and went home. To say he isn't doing enough for young people is placing a special standard on him that others don't meet either, but he must for some reason.

I think at some point people need to realize that a person's ability to play a sport is not dependent on their moral dispositions. There's an athlete, and then there's the person they are outside of the sport. And no one should take moral instructions from an athlete based on their ability to play a game. I will continue to honor Wayne Gretzky as the (second

The thread maker sees him as not looking sober I think he may look as if he is could be having various deteriorating medical issues some related to hockey that make things harder for him, and since we get no medical reports on retired players I give him the benefit of the doubt. Other than if some trustworthy person just says no wayne didn't want to put on our jersey.
I don't assume the worst in a person withijt factual knowledge just because I may not like someone they are friends with or they support

If you read past the part of the knee issue in the post I said next and he had pain in his body. That is the relevant part and all we know if his health is what we heard as he retired.
It is vague because athletes are vague about injuries.
I have family members that will only wear a button on shirt or sweater and they stop wearing anything that pulls over the head as that becomes difficult and painful as they age.
Did he at least go into the Canada dressing room to address the guys before the game? Mario did, if he didn't that really rubs me the wrong way, not going to lie.

Outside of hockey where many players are pretty good people traditionally, you will find many celebrities are a holes a lot of the time and full of crazy ideas.
Having well off friends and not being worried about having just enough to pay bills makes it hard to be out of touch with the average person.
As a player he is one of the greatest. He made four on four so dangerous they took it out of the game for decades because it became an oilers power play.
The back of the net was now a place to create plays not a dead zone. Add in his records and abilities and he gets respect as an athlete
