HF Habs: Goldenhands top 31 for the upcoming draft (Final list)

For me, the problem with Jiricek (pre injury) was his skating. You can sugar coat it all you want but he doesn't have a good stride, is mechanically weak and choppy, his speed is very average, and then you have to consider what the knee injury might have done to him. But let's just say, there's no problem with his recovery. The problem with his skating is still at the forefront. Seeing that HuGo has stressed skating, I don't think he's the guy for them
That's the weakness, for sure, but technique can be refined. Gorton/Hughes seem to value skills and I believe they'll support the players we obtain from now on accordingly. Tbh I'd be happy with Nemec too, he's got the more cerebral game I appreciate. But Jiricek's athletic and offensive gifts are very exciting. We need a general on the PP, and even though Guhle is gonna be a solid top-pairing defenseman in my opinion, he's not that.

However, I doubt we draft later than 2. Just a feeling of course. But whatever happens, I've made my mind : wherever we pick between 1 and 4, I have no doubt we'll get a bluechip prospect. I'd be thrilled to get any of : Wright, Cooley, Jiricek, Nemec, Slafkovsky, Nazar with our earliest selection.

This is just straight up false. His stride may not be perfect but his skating and mobility is absolutely a strength.

No it isn't. Sure he's mobile but his skating is not a strength. THAT is just straight up false. I never said his skating was bad (not that you said I did), I just don't think it's elite. And I don't think it ever will be. He skates decently but name me one elite defenseman in the new generation who's skating isn't elite. It's pretty much a prerequisite.

So if his mechanics are corrected, he'll be that much better right.....OMG, I want Jiricek so badly, but not at 1, at 2 or 3

If this happens, I'll probably end up pulling my back from fist pumping so much

And that's fine. I also think Habs should take either jiricek or Nemec at 3. Personally I prefer Nemec, other Jiricek, but I have them ranked 3rd and 4th so it's not a big deal for me. But people saying jiricek should go no.1 are absolutely bonkers. Part of the reason I have jiricek ranked below Nemec is because I don't think he'll be close to the skater Nemec is. Even if he does improve, he probably will never be elite and that's a prerequite for being an elite D in today's NHL

@Goldenhands

I am surprised you have Wright at 10th. I was expecting you to have him in the 2nd round. :sarcasm:
I was seriously considering Neuchev over him, but decided to play safe on this one,,,
I Love this list. It's clear that you have watched these players and you also know what you like. Everyone always laughs at Button and Woodlief but the fact is that a list like this is a lot closer to what a scout in an organization will have. Great stuff. Really fun read.

What's become more and more clear is that this is a deep draft and the top of it is becoming more and more murky. I'm curious how close the gaps are in your projections? Would you be inclined to trade down or do you think Jiricek is just that good?

Thanks for sharing this!

I would think about trading down only if we draft 3 OV and that Jiricek and Slafkovsky are gone. Then I would target Mintyukov, Kemell, Yurov, Cooley, with the Columbus pick, all very good talents,

I don't really think you made this list with a contrarian set of mind but holy hell is it out there. I personally don't agree with a lot of choices (even though I think Jiricek is the best D in the draft) but I respect your take.

I remember @Mrb1p saying something along the lines of : I prefer to get things wrong with my own evaluation and gut than to sit on the fence and parrot the experts' opinion. Dude was telling us Josh Brook would be a top pairing defenseman for a long time and it seems he was mistaken but he had reasons to back up this claim and I'm sure he wouldn't do anything different.
Got damn close too, if it wasnt for the multiple injuries >.>

In my mind Josh is a star.

@Goldenhands Have you done the same excercise in previous years That would be interesting see past results.
Nope, first and last one, too demanding. My armchair scouting career is over. I dont plan to watch much junior hockey in the upcoming years, will stick on watching our own prospects once in a while.

Thanks for the list, it always takes a lot of time and effort to put something like that together. Some interesting choices for sure.

I have been a big proponent of Jiricek from the beginning, so I'd have no issue if he was the Habs pick. I think a top pairing of him and Guhle down the road would be pretty terrific.

But in all seriousness, I appreciate all the work you put into this. It's always nice to see somebody go with their own opinion as opposed to following the consensus. Time will tell if you were right or not.

Diverse opinions helps a lot brainstorming wise, to counter the inevitable stagnancy of ideas when mostly everyone thinks about the same.

But just like when I read Steve Kournianos or Simon Boisvert rankings, I read for the content, not because I think those rankings will be anything near reality.

Entertaining, nonetheless, and I thank you for that.

If you hit with this ranking....and I am not even kidding.....this 100 percent needs to be forwarded to every single NHL team, and you need to be hired on the spot. Like seriously.....think about it. A consensus of NHL scouts have a ranking that is so different than yours, and you somehow get it all right.

I appreciate the boldness here, but it is either bold mixed with clear hockey sense, or some idiocy on a whole new level. I'm rooting for you to be right though....it would be hilarious and somewhat validating for every single one of us diehard fans on HFhabs to have one of our own be hockey smart on a mensa level.

Does this poster have any scouting background? This is not threadworthy, or is every poster allowed to put together a bullshit clickbait mock list and call it a thread.

Cooley at 7, Wright at 10. Absolute joke of a list lol

I think the poster's old username was @GrantMcCagg
