Canada won the game behind the bench with much better coaching. They correctly assessed the weakness of Finland's offense in comparison to their defense, and concluded that they could afford a heavy forecheck of 3 or 4 players without having to worry about being made to pay with counterattacks. Finland had no offense, and they had no plan to deal with an all-out forecheck. Give them credit for desperately keeping pucks out of their net under extreme duress.

How is it that Russia can continue to lose to Finnish teams that have no offense and only a collapsing defensive style? Simple. Russian coaching is even worse than Finland's. And Finland believes they can beat Russia, while they believe that they can't beat Canada when it counts. Russia should have been in the GMG yesterday, but found a way to lose to a Finnish team that looked hapless the next day.

Yeah and if Yanks woulda had Hallebucyk in net, they woulda beat us in the semis. Hockey's a funny game sometimes...' Styles make fights', as they say...

Too bad those young Yanks couldn't show their best in the bronze game. Not to make excuses, but don't think they had enough recovery time...they expended too much physical and emotional energy vs Canada , plus playing late followed by early game is really tough, plus they faced a smarting team RUS which came loaded for Bear...once they got a few goals up rout was on :shakehead

But I don't remember when Canada and US fight for 3 place.... Even for me game for 3 place is not interesting, i started an installation Mac Os in PC and did't watch match.

The American A Team doesn't care about 3rd place, BUT this was their D team. They were mostly college kids and first year NHLers ...good skaters and talented, in the main...BUT very VERY Green...

For them, 3rd place woulda been a Great result...In hindsight, even 4th was damn good...

They didn't quit imo, they just ran outa gas...Plus Bobrovsky was better than Kinkaid...Hallebucyk woulda been a different story...again with him, they likely play for Gold :amazed:

I can tell you - nobody cares about 3 place. Not US, not Russia, not Canada, not Finland, not Sweden. We always wait for GOLD.
P.S I don't care about A team of US, but I respect players who came. Who came - they are A team. Other - Z team.

Somebody told that Mozyakin is lazy? Then what I can say about players who even did't come for play of national team? Hyper-lazy?

Team Canada attacked the weaknesses of team Finland ruthlessly (our slow and inaccurate opening plays in our own end) and as a result dominated the game with speed and physicality.

Only three Finns truly showed up to this game to win (Koskinen, Granlund and Aho) which was disappointing.

But congratulations to Canada! :)

Nonsense. Bronze rules! Look up the Finnish celebrations in Sochi, there's a hugging line and everything! A team pic with photogenetic OJ!

Everybody here in van has pretty much called tanev. Hamhuis/vlasic 2.0

Now he got the exposure he deserves.

Congratulations to Canada for the Gold medal! :) You guys deserved it. Hoping for Russia - Canada finals in the future.

Congrats to Team Canada! Sochi 2014 blueprint how to win was all over this gold medal game as well. I think we'll see more of the same at the World Cup. Great goaltending though low shots on goal, and stellar defence in part due to superior puck possession. There will always be enough skill up front to get the necessary goal or two. Discipline and staying out of the box is the final factor. Any team will lose if they give up too many Power Play chances. Getting the pests like Perry in Vancouver and Sochi and Moscow, Couturier last year in Prague, and Marchand and Gallagher in Moscow to tow the party line and stay out of the box, shows the strong team-first dynamic that Canada has been playing with Internationally through this last several year long glorious run

Lie. We always care about a medal.

Thing is...neither Gallagher nor Marchand never stayed outa the box...Gallagher, for example, took two foolish/needless penalties ...the first , in the offensive zone, on his first shift, roughly 11 minutes into the game vs Yanks in semis ( think it was ). And remember when Marchand ripped a guy's helmet off at the end of the play? ...stupid!

the pluses for Marchand, despite his volatile/unpredictable nature, might still outweigh the minuses, when it comes to final selections for our Ateam...Gallagher ( who I've taken to calling Marchand-lite) Not so much...

they stayed out of the box in the gold medal game....team discipline at its finest. Helmet removal versus what France? Nothing to get excited about. Yes, Gallagher took some dumb penalties versus the US, and we almost paid dearly for that....but in the final game, he and every other Canadian played up to their potential. Sure I wish they would play like that all ten games, but they're human, and as always, Canada tends to play up or down to the level of the competition
