If the Russians stormed off the ice right after the game, that would be one thing. They waited plenty of time and then left awkwardly. It should have been handled better, but it's not a big deal.
I don't blame this classless affair completely on the Russians as I thought the ceremony was weird. Something was not quite right, but these are professional players who are experienced with international competitions, they should know that there's an anthem coming up. Even I know that and I'm a nobody. The Russian coaching staff should have told the players to stay, but even they were arse. I now have a lot more respect for Ovechkin, Malkin and handful of others. Kovalchuk on the other hand is GARBAGE.

At the end of the day, it's not a big deal for us Canadians. I don't even want the Russian Federation to be punished; I think this is enough humiliation already. It should be a big deal for the Russians though because if it was the Canadian team who did that, I would be extremely ashamed and would want the players be known how disgraceful they were and never to do that again.

Finland waited through the exact same ceremony against Russia till after the anthem.

Anyway, moving on, a mistake was made, they've apologized. I'm sure it won't happen again.

Agreed with all of this.

Congrats and kudos to Team Canada, awesome commitment and play after a very long NHL season to win in convincing and in a commendable fashion....

Now to the sad aspects of this ending of what was a great tournament in My view as a "hockey fan"...

The World Hockey Championships has not really been taken seriously by North American hockey fans... that is changing now... the viewership of Canadians this year was excellent (could have been better re: NASCAR in Manitoba market - I had to stream it... Russian feed moron TSN)

As for most of the Russian players leaving with Kovalchuk leading the exodus... wasn't offended, wasn't surprised the Russian Hockey Management will deal with it I am sure... I believe they are sincere with their accepting of it and admitting it was outrageous and embarrassing. Russians have a lot to be proud of in their hockey history... I am sure they know this was a low point.

For Canadians, the Russians actions were not a big deal - excepting for those that know the protocol and history of this tournament. I noticed, but petulant behavior is expected of certain individuals. The mistake of the Russian players leaving contributing to their disgrace did not take away from the joy, appreciation and impressiveness of the Canadian victory. We are over it, not outraged, mostly not in our make up to be outraged.

I have never been a big Ovi' fan... but I have to say I am impressed. Ovechkin showed true leadership: humility and respect that should be shown a classy champion and the Canadian team this year was classy, clean and immensely hockey skilled. To all the Russians that stayed... you are Champions yourselves... true sportsmen... truly blessed... :handclap::yo:

On an unrelated side note, i was just wondering what was the name of the song that was played when any team scored a goal at the WHC? I am not a big music fanatic, but i liked that tune (LOL). Thanks in advance.

They played different songs for different teams.

For Canada, it was the Sheepdogs with Feeling Good.

The US had Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen IIRC.

It's also worth pointing out that the majority of Russian fans who have voiced their opinion is apologetic. They agree it was disrespectful and disgraceful, so it's not actually a Canadians vs Russians issue, which is good. There is a consensus beyond national affiliation.

And we were lucky it was Miller and Ferraro calling it, the best of the best.

So many subscribers to what some call, group-think, disparaged McGuire for what they saw as being a shameless homer. Meanwhile Euro commentators ( P. Forsberg WJC 2009 springs to mind ). are WAY more ethnocentric ! To me, Pierre's color commentary ( for example, of the 2005 WJC Gold Game...remember DOUBLE-DION ?) was classic...Ferraro ( whose not bad by any means ) pales in comparison.

Show me a politically correct type, who gets bent outa shape over minor faux pas/ so-called homerism, yet has nada to say about our emerging police state, and I'll show u a gutless hypocrite...

Ditto those dissing the Russians, ad nauseum, over ostensibly dissing our anthem. They shook hands, waved to the crowd, in amiable fashion. Gate got opened, somebody called them off, and they left. BIG DEAL...To me, some are making a mountain outa a molehill

Meanwhile, our anthem + flag are fast becoming corporatist symbols, which no longer stand for all that was once great about our country at all...

But by all means hypocrites keep on flapping ur gums, OVER NOTHING!

END RANT..

Thanks for not disrespecting our people. Our team should've stayed on the ice, that was a mistake. Canada did great this year and fully deserved the win. Another page in the classic rivalry - can't wait to see more matches between these two teams.
