wow... you know... everyone of our defencemen tonight have made one huge blunder.

Yeah they have, fair enough, just seems like those guys have been having a bit more problems than some of the others.

Either way, I've thought cutting Fluery was a mistake all along. They could use him right now.

Those penalties were the right calls.

Fucale is terrible. what a terrible player. This is an epic collapse.

Does that mean we can conclude that McDavid and Nurse are bad leaders and players? That's the logic used with the leafs and Kessel and Phaneuf.

since when the hell is Phil Kessel a leader

Fucale can't control rebounds to save his life. And our defense just went MIA... Shades of 2011 or I should say 1999

McDavid line gets benched, give up 3 goals, McDavid line comes back spends 60 second in Russian zone.

Let him and Lazar kill penalties they will probably score a shorty

Canada took all those penalties. McDavid hasn't had a chance to come on the ice. How is that a bench?

This is a penalty.. even in the NHL.. so obviously it would be in the IIHF. Not seen in the gif is Virtanen reading the play from behind the net and building up speed to just run this guy. He could have made a smart play and just used the body a little bit and gotten the puck, but no, he had to run the guy.

That's a great hit.

Choke job well executed. Russian zone entry is too much for the Canadian system and D.

Russia hasn't done anything on the zone entry, every goal they've had has been a result of the Canadian D not cleaning up in front of the net. Russia looks bad getting into the zone but once they're in all they need to do is get in front of the net and they're left alone

Comrie is not better than Fucale, why would Canada pull him?

Exhibit A. Russia pulling their starter for their backup who has also played great.

He's also much better with rebound control, might see another of the 2nd? goal by the Russians but nothing being pushed in the crease I'd bet

The tournament has been too easy on the Canadian's defence, they never had a real challenge and now that they're playing a good team they're completely exposed

The game has been back and forth, you might notice.
Powerplays do tend to skew things a bit, oui?

Honestly, the most glaring thing here was the coach not calling a timeout after the Russians scored to make it 5-3. If they come back to win the game, that's the turning point IMO.

And the Gauthier line needs to **** off. Yeah they cycle down low, but they generate no offense and are collectively way too slow to catch up/prevent Russia's breakout. It felt like I saw Gauthier et al twice as much as I saw McDavid.

That's because McDavid is invisible and Gauthier is making a difference.

He was playing his shut down guys to hold a 4 goal lead.

Gauthier on ice for 3 Goals against. Can't get a shot on a breakaway....

"Shutdown" player. Lol

He doesn't have the speed or agility to defend the Russian forwards, and he doesn't have the skill to move the puck up ice effectively.

I've said over and over on the Leafs board that it takes a fair amount of skill even to be a 3rd line forward in the NHL.

Don't see any way this guy amounts to more than a 4th line PK specialist like Jay McClement. He's going to be one of those guys who takes the odd faceoff in his own end and you just hope he can at least get the puck to the red line to dump it in without icing so he can get off.

My problem with the reffing is that it appeared the refs were going to put the whistles away and call basically nothing. There were a lot of penalties in the first period and a half. Then all of a sudden the refs call a bunch in a row, all on Canada.

As a fan I'd like them to be consistent.

I don't understand Paul on McDavid's line. They haven't played a shift together this tournament, gold medal game 2nd period doesn't seem like a good time to experiment.

Canada is afraid to make hits after the bs Virtanen penalty, they have no idea what will be called anymore.
