Why use a retention on a guy on an expiring contract?

PS: I get it may have improved the return value a bit, but in the other thread we were discussing how a 3rd round pick was a good return for a guy with 0 value. So if Gus, who can be a very good player, would only get a 3rd rounder at the TDL without burning a retention ... something doesn't add up.

I fully understand it's sort of a "no big deal" thing ... but for a wheeler-dealer like Trotz, it was his last retention for this TDL. So that means he has nothing if some GM asked him to help with a 3-way or something. Oh well. Not the end of the world.

The retention is what got this to a 2nd(and means nothing to us because it will be gone as soon as the season ends) Based on this years numbers he's worth about a 4th at best. Not that I'm all excited or think Trotz is a genius but this is an ok deal

I've generally liked Trotz's trades. He has gotten good value for each of our guys this season. It's everything else that concerns me.

He had 5 points in 3 games in 22-23 for the wild so could be quite possible. Might also explain a little bit of why they wanted him.
