I am 68 yo and still play. I played college hockey in the early-mid 70's... no mask.
I played journeyman minor league hockey in the late '70s to early 80's... no mask.
Beer league hockey in my mid late 30's no mask.
Since then, a half visor to present day.
The full face shield was introduced to the NCAA in 1978-79...then the game changed.
Why the NCAA is the only high-end amateur hockey league that requires full facial protection and what players think about the rule.

As an older player, I am amazed at the reckless play of my younger cage-wearing teammates.
Not pro or con, just offering a good read on the subject of this thread.
I think you misunderstood....... The risks for a lot of people are worth it when you are 20 yrs old, moreso than when you settle down, get married, have kids, have a job, etc. That applies to a lot of things in life.
When I went from a visor back to a cage, tried a couple at the time (long ago now).
One thing I remember is the grey or white ones I found less distracting than the black cages.
