so this is really the key. if the puck is in the crease, the player does have the right to try and play it. but in this case the puck was not in crease when he was pushing the goalies pad with his stick, so in this particular case it should have been interference.

OK, but you see how this invalidates what you said before and gets us back to the nuances involved in the rule, right? Not saying this decision was correct.
