Goalies...Does tape color matter?

I was having a debate with a teammate the other day and he swears white tape is harder for the goalie to pick up the puck, I feel black tape is. Discuss.

I'm not a goalie but my common sense would think the contrast of white with a black puck would make more sense...

IMO Black tape would be harder to read because the Black tape would hide the Black puck...

Whereas you can clearly see the Black puck against the background of white tape as you craddle it on your stick for a shot.

For this reason, I've always used Black tape.

Personally I have always just liked the look of white tape more. No reason other than I think it looks better, I don't think theres a difference.

My goalie says he finds no difference between shooters with white tape and those with black tape.

It really doesn't matter. Unless thet goalie is colour blind he can see the puck on your blade.

i asked our team's goalies this same question, they said it doesn't matter because they know when a puck is in a player's stick and they don't just observe the puck, they also observe the player's movement, foot stance, shoulders, eyes, etc.

As a goalie, I honestly don't care, I can see the puck on both

I was wondering the same thing but with total stick color, ie easton mako sticks. my thinking was that the goalie might not see the stick as quickly due to it seems(in pictures) to blend into the ice more than a black stick. that half a sec or sec it takes a goalie to see it may be enough time for a onetimeer or backdoor goal to go in. the goalie i asked didnt seem to think it would matter but have been wondering

No difference for me. Black tape doesn't camouflage the puck as much as you might think.

The only thing I notice about stick tape is when the other team's snipers have funky coloured tape - it makes it easier to spot them with a glance, and alerts me to expect a shot quicker. So I appreciate it. ha ha

I've had times where I've lost the puck due to black socks/pants/skates...but never cause of the color of their blade tape.

Rarely have I heard goalies say it makes a difference.

Thinking of trying half white and half black. I like the Ovi tape job because I can quickly see where the puck is on my stick and if it's in the shooting part of my curve (Sakic). But my heel gets chewed up quickly and I like some tape back there for catching passes.

Doesn't matter for me. If the puck's meant to find the back of the net (in my case, more often than not), then it'll find the back of the net regardless of tape colour.

One of the goalies on my team said that the tape doesn't matter (happened after Don Cherry pointed it out on Coach's Corner). Most of it is based on the mechanics of the type of shot and the shooter (ie: the instinct of reacting to when they "feel" the puck has left the other player's stick and then tracking it to wherever they want the puck to hit their body) - that was the best he could explain for me.

A lot of people say black tape hides the puck better while white tape blends in with the ice more. I wanted the best of both worlds, so I use gray tape.

Now this makes me wonder about the counter though....Shooters, have you ever missed a 5 hole because a goalie had on white accented leg pads? think the Heaton Gatekeeper design...

I generally like to use odd colors like blue, green, gold, red etc.

Cant say goalie pad color makes a difference for me, but when youre staring down at the puck the whole time nothing will make a difference....

Work on a quick release and the goalie's going to have a lot tougher time stopping the puck! Add in the toe drag to change the angle and it's pretty effective.

I always thought tape was used to show your teammates where you want to receive a pass on your blade.

The color of tape is used to make a contrast with the color of your stick. So if your stick is a light color you use black tape and a black stick, white tape.

I never heard it as far as for hiding the puck, ect.
