Le gouvernement du Québec défend l'expression « Go! Habs Go! » | RDS
Le ministre de la Langue française, Jean-François Roberge, a affirmé que ce slogan fait partie intégrante de l'ADN et de l'identité du Québec.
The Quebec government is intervening to defend the phrase "Go! Habs Go!"
French Language Minister Jean-François Roberge stated that the slogan is an integral part of Quebec's DNA and identity and has been used for decades to support the Montreal Canadiens hockey team.
His statement on Friday comes after the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) removed the phrase "Go! Canadiens Go!" from city buses, replacing it with "Allez! Canadiens Allez!" following a complaint filed with the Office québécois de la langue française (OQLF) regarding the use of the English word "go."
Minister Roberge said that OQLF employees have received threats since the change made headlines Thursday.
He stated that the OQLF will reject any future complaints regarding "Go! Habs Go!" and that this "traditional phrase must never be called into question."
The OQLF stated that it did not oppose the use of this expression, but added that public bodies have a legal obligation to use exemplary French.
The Canadiens host the third game of their first-round playoff series against the Washington Capitals on Friday night. The Canadiens trail 2-0 in this best-of-seven series.
