Post-Game Talk: [GM79] Canucks defeat Avalance | 4-1 | DeBrusk, Sherwood, Joshua, & Hoglander | Finishing Strong

There was a game last night? Just kidding. Too busy watching BU win. Good to know our depth can beat Colorado's depth though. Van just needs better star players.
Colorado was doing light cardio out there. It's like us losing 2 games vs the garbage Oilers in 2011 when we had the PT in the bag. Games like this mean absolutely nothing other than watching the youngsters at work.

One thing I hate are players who did f*** all for most of the season and who start to pad their stats in garbage time when other teams are not even trying. They remind me of Jussi Jokinen who was aquired at the deadline, was uselss all seasons, traded by3 teams and went super sayan with the canucks in the last 5-6 games messing our draft position.

Well we beat them too when it mattered. I think the only thing that matters in the next few games is how the kids do. Maybe Sherwood hitting 20 would be good for his confidence next season.

I know how DARE he excel when he suddenly gets way more icetime...

$2.5m x 2 years. I'd go longer but he'll be 31 when the new contract kicks in. You could make the argument for more but he's a guy who didn't become an NHL regular until the age of 28.
Asking because I’m genuinely curious , not trying to be a smart ass

But could this also mean he can play well into his 30’s because of less wear and tear?

He was playing hockey but not in the NHL. Didn't turn pro until 23. Probably got screwed over by COVID to a fair extent. Looking at his AHL scoring profile and his style of play, it's hard to understand why he wasn't a regular sooner. He may have been one of those guys who had to develop other skills in order to stick in the NHL.

Either way, he'll not likely be able to keep his motor at the same level as he enters his mid 30's.

Last night's result really underscores how unreliable these games are in garbage time. Canucks put in workmanlike effort.

But the Av's looked almost completely unengaged in this game. They can't go up or down in the standings-and are fated to play Dallas in the first round.

The only time they showed any spark last night was when Makar was on the ice. And that might have had more to do with a rivalry he has with Quinn Hughes, than anything else. And Lankinen still had to make a number of crucial saves for the Canucks to hang on.

But on the positive side--another solid outing for a lot of the AHL call-ups, Raty, Karlsson, EP25 and Mancini. And that's really what these relatively meaningless games are all about.

When has this regime ever done that? They'll likely try to move the 1st in a trade for a young center. A mid 1st will likely not do anything to help the team compete in the Hughes window.

Unless of course Hughes signs another contract then all those draft picks would absolutely help the team in his window.

no problem with trading the 1st if they go for a legit decent centre. But a 16th OA isn't going to get you a game changer. It's a lose lose situation. That 1st isn't going to move the needle in Hughes time frame. But trading that 1st isn't either.

Geez if only we had another second rounder to attach in a trade a la the Hronek trade. I still scoff when people say we shouldn't have traded Boeser cause it's only a second. Like what ... it's the second best draft pick you can have, of course it's valuable.

Hansen on 650 last week talked about garbage time last week, worth the listen

short version: it means jack sh . . . er, I mean, profound insights are virtually unobtainable

yeah, that

oh, and that succeeding worsens your draft position

iirc, the only thing anyone learns is that the callups learn playing in the big show rocks, and they should train harder in the offseason to get a spot on the roster, or something like that

While it's probably the case that you could fill many of the holes in the roster trading Hughes, you'd end up losing a player that everyone else can learn from. He seems like the kind of player who can make other players better by example.

If you add Willander to this squad, with Demko and Lanky sharing the net, you can count on a lot more goals coming from the defence and you build your forwards with that in mind. I think management has to build on the strengths of the players they have now and not weaken one area to try and make another better.

Wingers show up all the time and don't generally cost that much and if you're still banking on EP40 returning to form, which you kind of have to do for at least another season, then really, they just need to find one competent second line centre who's good on draws. Someone with speed. that's likely your biggest expense.

Kind of the wrong thread.

You trade Hughes only if he asks out. Anyone suggesting otherwise is a f***ing meat puppet
