Not sure what you're remembering, but Horvat played zero defense, like the rest of the team, and cherry picked his way to inflating his goal stats.

Miller was 50% bozo and 50% solid.

Pretty sure that was injury year for Pettersson and but I think Boeser was decent. There wasn't any team structure until Tocchet arrived.

I'm not saying these players all sucked, because clearly there was talent there, but the team was by any measurable standard, poor. They didn't look at all like a threat for anything, never mind the playoffs.

Maybe it's me that's misremembering, but I honestly think this one's on you.
No, my point is that you plunk current day Quinn now onto those teams, we’d have a “better” team in terms of talent. There would be an avenue to improve the team and level up.

You can make trades for the Marcus Pettersson’s of the world. I don’t see us replacing a 1c capable of shutdown minutes like Miller did last year. I think Bo as a face off ace 2c is also near impossible to replace in Hughes’ contract timeframe.

I really did enjoy Boudreau hockey tbh. Very fun hockey to watch, even if we were flawed and lacked defensive structure. But I don’t see much offensive structure all the same with Tocchet, so it depends on how you look at things.

This looked like a game from early in the season where all the defensive staples the team played with that led to success last season were out the window. Horrible coverage all over in our half of the ice. Created more offensively than usual but also gave up more than usual.

- Silovs was excellent in the 1st but needed to have at least one of those in the 2nd. Overall I wouldn't put the blame on him because the team was pretty horrendous defensively.

- Hughes trying his hardest to create despite being hobbled but it wasn't enough. He was unlucky not to have a goal or at least another point with how much he directed towards the net.

- Top forwards were invisible and that was the difference. Pettersson with another horrendous "effort". Interesting contrast between him and Terry, who isn't exactly a burner himself but several times in the game was able to hold onto the puck, slow the game down to his pace, and make a nice play. Even if the knee injury is a real thing, Petey should still be able to make plays with the puck on his stick but he simply doesn't.

- Lots of the bottom-6 / depth forwards trying hard out there but you can only ask so much from them. We have guys playing on both PP units that simply should not be there due to lack of top end talent.

Not too too terrible, canucks just looked tired/sloppy, didn't get stellar goaltending, and still continually do not get shots on goal in prime opportunities.

If their top ten center was playing like, forty percent of his contract value, the team would look insanely different and win a lot more of the close games.

11 ES Goals in last 104 games....this franchise is in big trouble

For reference 121 players have more than that this year.
Such names as Beauvillier Kolesar JVR McMann Gaudette Cotter Holmstrom Robinson Suter Sherwood...."this year" without the 52 games of last season to get more

There definitely was some fun with the whole Bruce there it is vibe, and of course no more Benning. I did feel that the team lacked any system, but you're correct it was fun.

We saw last year in the playoffs, the impact of just one of your top guys playing below his level can impact a team (Pettersson), so I'm under no illusion that the team was going to really recover losing Miller.

The team would be so much better if Miller didn't quit on them, and they'd traded their first rounder for Pettersson.

Losing Miller has killed Boeser and EP40 is clearly making his plans known through his play. I honestly don't know how any management comes back from this kind of situation.

I would like to see a time-line of "around" when the Canucks seemed to signify that EP40 was going to be the chosen one/face of the franchise and when core pieces started to get shipped out, often due to disinterest and checking out.

Since EP...horvat, toffoli, Miller, tanev, markstrom...seems like a lot of veteran players moved on but have had success elsewhere

My EP40 for future considerations thread got shut down because mods thought i was trolling.

I ain't, this guy's straight up terrible. Management has basically said he's lazy. He's a baby.

If he doesn't get going, this contract will sink this organization significantly for my entire 40s until I'm 50 years old. That's unbearable.

I pray I'm wrong

Tonight’s Game
  • Didn’t connect on a 2-on-1 and also missed on a breakaway
  • Anaheim then countered with a rush game
  • Canucks’ players decided to abandon the game plan
  • Need some guys to rise to the occasion; whether that’s a middle drive; going to the net; had shots on net where no one was going to the net
  • A little disappointed in the grit part of their game
  • Have guys standing at the side of the net and that won’t win hockey games
  • They kinda gave in
  • Hope the players don’t think they can rest on a 2-0 lead in the 1st period
  • Are a desperate hockey team and need to stick to the game plan
  • Had too many guys that, instead of going straight, went right or left; too much perimeter play
  • Had talked about how to defend the rush and defended it wrong

Just isn't there. Really the only reason team is still in it is b/c of Lankanin. At this point, even on paper, the Ducks are probably the better team. Team battles, but top end isn't good enough and rest is mediocre.

Good

Myers - kick-started the team in the first and worked hard and mostly successfully in his end.

Garland - just on hustle and fight.

O'Connor - not elegant, but was driving the puck up the ice all game. Playing good two way hockey.

Bad

Pettersson - how long before the fans in Vancouver start booing him. Just a total miscall by management in giving him that contract at this point. More or less dooms the team moving ahead. Whole "go for it now" was built around him and Hughes and that is now looking clearly the wrong direction taken. Was again bleak in this game. Makes the occasional good pass but mostly stumbling around with the puck. Play generally in his end with him out.

Soucy - Too slow getting the puck up to the forwards and zero range of coverage. Last season used a good stick to break up plays but now forced back into crease consistently.

Boeser - can we please trade him. Can create nothing on his own. Trying defensively but you can any number of players to do that and do it better.

DeBrusk - showed a little life in the third but mostly a passenger and non-factor. Had trouble getting puck out of his zone repeatly.

Silovs - positioning was terrible. Too far back often, too much sliding from side to side. Made relatively easy saves look hard and beat easily up high. He is all about just reaction saves rather than using anticipation and situating himself correcting. Tolopilo is no better (indeed might be worse) but maybe he should be given a shot. He can then always tell his grand children he played in the NHL.

EP2 - had his worse game. Had trouble with the Duck forecheck and forced into turnovers. 7 player d-man rotation wasn't helping him. Needs a regular partner rather than having to adjust to whoever he is matched with.

Others

Hughes - created offense but had very rough game in his end. Totally over played and this did more to hinder overall team play than help it.

Chytil - was decent off the rush and was dangerous at times but work in his own end needs to be better (-3 in this one) although some of that had to do with not getting a save.

You hope management can give up the pretense that team can do anything meaningful this season and start the rebuild this team should have been doing from the start of their take-over. But given the dead weight that Pettersson is, this is going to be difficult. In the end, that Pettersson contract will likely lead to the end of the Allvin period in Vancouver.
