First game in a long time that gave me hope for Petey, sick pass on the 1st goal and overall very much engaged and making good plays throughout the ice.

And good to see the team keep playing with structure and purpose, even without Hughes the D has consistently been able to find the forwards and transition the puck. Seeing a lot less of the boards-and-pray that defined a large chunk of our season so far.

Think the boys have been running on fumes for a while so the break will be good. That's true for every team to an extent, but given the shakeup the team had plus Tocchet's brand of hockey, it's more of a blessing for us.

Our last three games before the break were COL, SJS and TOR and Calgary's last three games were TOR, COL and SEA tonight. So 2 tough matchups and 1 easy one for each.

We won all three and Calgary lost against TOR and COL. Would be huge if they lose tonight.

The team will be itching to come back and excited to play more of the winning hockey they were playing before the break. If you get an energized and motivated Hughes and Pettersson leading this new look Canucks, the rest of the western conference needs to be on notice.

I made this joke last game but it is less funny because he was genuinely their best forward tonight and played to his salary. Making plays all over the ice. Had 1 point, could have had more with a little luck. Plus that win securing block on Marner at the end.

He needs to keep stacking these moments on top of each other keep and the production will return.

obligatory small sample size but since the JTM trade, the Canucks are 14th in the league in xGF/60 and are 5th in xGA/60. basically a return to roughly where they were last season relative to the rest of the league.

Id never say this on the main boards because I'd drown in Leaf angy tears before getting permabanned but...

Whenever I see Nylander out there I am super happy as a fan of the opposing team. He does NOTHING defensively but will wander in the slot and be a screen for his goalie. Its funny how many times Chytil or Petey legit used him as a pick or manipulated his position in the slot to create chances for us.

Auston Matthews is also incredibly overrated. I know hes been injured this year and hes not been in rhythm but he does so little to dictate games compared to guys like McDavid, Mackinnon, Kucherov, Draisaitl, Quinn Hughes, etc. Hes more of a clutch scorer than he is a legit generational "takes over games" type of guy. Hes the best goalscorer of the current generation, but he isnt in that top tier with McDavid.

On the Canucks end of things, Petey with a super strong game, if he creates that many scoring chances while also shutting people down and making clutch plays like the one to end the game, I dont care if he only puts up a single assist (though with that many chances created he will get more points if he does it consistently). You can win with a guy like that if he does that much possession and disruption and play creation all over the ice. If he does that when Quinn Hughes is back (big if), then we might be fine.
