I get that Petey is having a quiet game. But we have such an emotional fan base.

Part of it I understand. People were/are attached to J.T. and upset by their perception that he did nothing wrong and they think Petey is 'soft' or whatever.

But this is chess, not checkers. Petey has shown himself to be a top ten center in this league.

He's struggling, and his shot and skating pace have plummeted because he's struggling through injury and not handling it well.

All of this points to injury. This isn't Space Jam. He didn't suddenly, permanently, lose his skills.

But I don't think he's going to look like himself until next year. I think he'll figure it out like he did when Miller was out for 10 games and be productive but not dynamic until next year.

If you need him to dominate every shift or else you need to scream to the heavens about how bad he is and how cooked our team is then it's going to be a long and exhausting year for you.
100% agreed, and the guys constantly upset about Petey and always putting him under a magnifying glass while ignoring everyone else are exasperating for me too, but there is one possible failure to your theory here: the assumption that he'll return to his previous level.

Sometimes, yeah, but some injuries don't allow that. We've seen that many times with this team. Daniel was never quite the same after getting elbowed in the head by Keith. As depressing as it is to think about, this might actually be who he is now. He might have gone from a 80 to 100 point player to a 50 to 60 point player. I mean, it's been a long time since we've seen him play like we used to see him play.

The sample size is too big at this point. This play has been over a calendar year now. It's included an extended playoff run, it's included an off-season to recharge, recoup, recover, whatever was needed. Petey is not the same player. I don't know how much longer we can afford to wait for him to live up to his cap hit.

The injury excuses are such major cope at this time.

Pettersson literally said "I want the pressure."

Does this sound like a guy who's injured?

Didn't he literally miss games a few weeks ago? And then he... wait for it... came back.

Why would he come back if he was still injured?

The degenerative tendonitis storyline is one of the biggest copium's I've seen from this fanbase ever.
Maybe he caught the elusive Hossa disease

Noticing now that the Miller being a bully excuse is gone, we're fully back on the injury excuse. Did we drop the "Not playing with Hughes enough" excuse as well, or are we sticking with that too once Hughes is back? How about wingers? Is Boeser and DeBrusk, not on his wings tonight?

The excuses will never end.
What's your explanation?

He's 'bad' now and 'doesn't care' and will never 'care' again?

Or he's suddenly aged 15 years?

Nobody is saying he's playing dynamically offensively.

But he can't skate or shoot like he normally can and that's murdering his confidence. What else do you think is happening?

Open question: He's hustling defensively, he's blocking shots, he's taking hits but he's struggling offensively and can't shoot or skate even close to his normal standards.

You think this is because he somehow cares about the unglamorous parts of hockey but suddenly doesn't care about the flashy bits? Does that make sense to you?

Or is it possible that he's playing through chronic pain, his confidence is shot, and he's trying not to hurt the team?

I'm not here to say your eyes are lying to you. He's not playing like we know he can.

But surely the compounding evidence that he's hurt and having a crisis of confidence are more plausible than him suddenly giving up on hockey, right?

Also, mark my words 11.6 million for him is going to look like a serious bargain within 3 years when he's himself again and something like the 25th highest paid player in the league. The cap is ballooning and 11.6 is going to look a lot different than it does now.

Nothing is at stake here, thats why he is not motivated. Its not like we are trying to make the playoffs.

I don't think he's going to get until next year. He's been playing like this for almost a year already, who's to say it doesn't continue? Id rather trade him while we still have control over where he goes and not get into another situation where the GM is using the media to pressure someone to waive their nmc

What does a trade get you though?

The Canucks are in win now mode with Quinn, they can’t afford to rebuild. I can’t see any trade where the Canucks are getting a player that is close to Petey’s potential right now. They have to gamble and hope that Petey finds his game unless there is some crazy trade on the table (think like the Panthers getting Tkachuk for Huberdeau)

I feel like this is a theme of the Canucks since the dawn of time. Something about this team sucks the life out of players.

Because if you're a smart hockey player defense is easy

Its not rocket science if EP40 continues to struggle, one thing we know about this management is they won't be afraid to move him.

And from the reports, the return is going to be significant.

Just like JT, I don't want to trade EP40, but if he doesn't improve, 11.6 on the cap is not going to work.

On the game, Chytil speed stands out obviously, he's able to carry the puck through the neutral zone and attack the blueline with speed - that's like discovering fire on this canucks team.
Garland/Joshua are probably our best winger pair in term of chemistry, so he's also put in a good position.

Marcus Pettersson, first game in a new team and you have to play with the chaotic giraffe. - who to his credit has been decent in January. Looks like the Steady dman I saw in Pitts. Lanky, good reach, very good timing with his stick. Battles in front of net and pins forwards against the walls - makes you wonder how he does that if hes truly only 175lbs. And moves the puck ok.

Most positive this game is DPetey - the NHL speed doesn't faze him, he looks very comfortable at this level.
Definitely showing to be a part of the future
