GDT: [GM51] Vancouver Canucks @ Dallas Stars | Fri, Jan. 31st | 5pm | SNP | Remember the Alamo?

Interesting storylines for this one:

-Both teams have won THREE games in a row
-Both teams have a THREE in their goal differential
-Vancouver has lost SEVEN games on the road, Dallas has lost SEVEN games at home
-Benns brother USE to play for the Canucks
-No player on EITHER team has played for the OTHER team
-Yeah

Soucy was really good last year, but hot stinky garbage this season. Playing with Juulsen doesn't help, but it also mostly a scapegoat. Soucy has badly lost his defensive positioning with regularity, and that's squarely on him. We need to acquire a good lhd to play with Hronek, let Hughes keep carrying Myers, and hope Soucy finds his game on the 3rd pairing with (eventually) Willander. This is the way, if competing is still the objective... assuming, of coarse, that the forwards get their shit together.

I agree with Brough or Halford (unsure which), Soucy needs to come out for this one.
Juulsen needs to be shot into the sun....

Soucy has not been good. agreed. But Juulsen isn't a scapegoat...numbers are appreciably worse for his partners compared to when paired with others.

Yeah, I like Juulsen a lot. He’s a local boy who worked through injuries to carve himself a spot in the NHL. And he had stretches last year where he looked very capable. And you can see him sacrificing the body, working hard, etc, all the things that endear a guy to a coach.

But he just hasn’t been good. Quite the opposite. And we have better options who should be dressing. D-Petey, Brisebois, Brannstrom - any of them, IMO, I would put in over Juulsen. Only debatable for me is Desharnais.

Juulsen sucks and the numbers show it, but the eyetest has shown Soucy making many mistakes that had nothing to do with Juulsen. Way too many chances allowed as a direct result of Soucy losing his positioning. He was also getting caved in with Myers. Soucy has just been really bad, for the most part.

I quit on the Canucks until they make changes.

But hey did change ....
January 29, 2025Reinstated C Dakota Joshua off injured reserve. Placed C Kiefer Sherwood on injured reserve. Reinstated D Noah Juulsen from injured reserve. Sent C Max Sasson to Abbotsford (AHL).

Dallas Stars
 • Strong defensively, structured well, and Pete DeBoer is a really good coach
 • They do some things with their d-zone coverage that the Canucks have to be ready for
 • Really good at defending the rush; make sure to manage the puck
 • Have to play a 60 minute game against them; will make you pay for mistakes
Positives
 • Breaking out the puck better and getting timely goals from different guys
 • Don’t back off; keep pressing when you have a lead
 • Want the puck and attack the interior
4 Nations Coaches
 • Have had a couple of zoom calls and talked strategy
 • Not asking about each others teams
 • Discussing logistics and building chemistry
 • Excited to represent Canada
Karlsson
 • Trying to establish himself in the NHL; his goal should be to be a really a really good net front and wall guy
 • When he’s on the ice, he needs to be around the net
 • Mentions Tomas Holmstrom; greasy goals and winning puck battles
 • Identify what you are and be elite at it
 • Feel that he can be one of those elite guys around the front of the net
Tocchet’s First NHL Goal
 • Was scored around the net in the Montreal Forum
 • Was not a pretty goal
