Pfft. They've lost 1 game in regulation in their last 10. And they're down by 2 basically because of 1 terrible minute of play, but still with 20 minutes left. Bigger picture they've got a nice break coming up to get rest and recharge. No reason to extrapolate one shitty period at the end of a long road trip. Total overreaction IMO.

It's crazy to me the difference in Strome's game from the beginning of the year to now. He looks terrible.

1. Protas needs to be on the PP. He’s their 2nd best forward and would be useful for zone entries
2. Ovechkin is just playing hot potato with the puck right now. If he has it for more than 2 seconds, he’s probably turning it over
3. Stop with the 2 defenseman on PP 1. Let Carlson or Chychrun anchor it. Chychrun is fine on the flank if he’s shooting the puck. But he’s not a playmaker and isn’t going to make the plays that Strome/Dubois would. He’s not shooting the puck enough even when they have possession to warrant him being there.
4. You can’t have Strome and Carlson/Chychrun/someone else slow carry the puck in. The drop pass is useless when you don’t have speed. Strome isn’t fast regardless, but you can at least pair him on the breakout with someone that will be skating with more pace.

Him and Ovechkin are both useless right now and even worse than that together. Strome isn’t carrying the puck like he was to begin the year and thinks he’s way better than he is now, trying to make plays he shouldn’t. Ovechkin can’t carry the puck either himself as is. And you pretty much just have Wilson running around like a mad man right now trying to do everything for that line.

Protas not being on the PP is a crime.

From the standpoint of PP entries, our Achilles heel, yes. At the very least he’s effective dumping and chasing.

Ottawa is standing up at the blue line because it’s essentially 4 on 4 with PP zone entries. You can’t pass it to Ovi. So why we weren’t dumping and chasing more is beyond me .

Sure, but they are winning despite themselves, mostly because they are getting lights out goaltending and their defense is so much better than last season.

I don't buy this. Their scoring is down, sure, but you don't win 80% of your games over the span of this many weeks "in spite of yourself." They are playing solid and consistent fundamental hockey overall. And that makes up for a lot of deficiencies.

Protas and Dubois and the goaltending have been dragging this team for awhile.
Strome, Ovi, Mango, etc have done pretty much squat to help the effort. Need them to pick it up somehow.

Play like this against WPG and you will get thoroughly embarrassed.
