GDT: [GM49] Vancouver Canucks @ St. Louis Blues | Mon, Jan. 27th | 4:30pm | Amazon Prime | Sing Me a Sweet Tune

Health Updates
  • Garland had a maintenance day; little banged up
  • Juulsen skated pretty well; game time decision
  • Joshua had a full practice and skated well
  • Lot of game time decisions on the team
  • Sherwood won’t travel but might meet them on the trip
Game Plan
  • Have been preaching that they need to get to the interior
  • Joshua and Sherwood are two guys who will get to the interior of the ice
St. Louis Blues
  • Really good rush team; have to make sure they stick to the game plan
  • Mentions this is a four point game
  • Doesn’t care who they play; just need to string some wins together; it’s time
Elias Pettersson, Forward
  • Worked on his skating and getting inside before practice
  • Focusing on having someone on your back but still getting the puck and making a play off that
  • Deferring too much
  • Will have to spend every day on this and string some practices together; can even do it during the morning skate
Confidence
  • Held their own against one of the top teams in the league
  • Like that they hung in there against a big team
Suter & Blueger on the PK
  • Chemistry-wise, have done a really nice job as the first guys on the PK
  • Both have hockey IQ; need a smart brain to play on the PK
  • Need to understand what shot do you want your goalie to have
  • Have liked that they are more aggressive up the ice
Lankinen
  • Has been dealing with a stomach virus
  • Gutted out a win and will see how he is tomorrow
  • Wasn’t at his full but is sure Demko doesn’t play at 100% either
Elias Pettersson, Defensive Extraordinaire
  • Will talk to Allvin again
  • Felt he needed to get into a regular pair for practice and get reps
  • Hard to evaluate a guy after one game and then not play him again
  • Likes what he brings; not sure if he’ll play tomorrow; mentions “roster stuff”
  • Definitely a guy that is a stuff, is big, wants to hit, wants to box out, and wants to learn
Tired Players
  • This team needs touches, need work
  • Felt more comfortable giving the team a day off then playing and will have to switch up his philosophy
  • Being mentally tired is not a good thing
  • When you think too much and let the distractions get to you, it affects your legs
  • Will not have a game day skate tomorrow and will have plenty of rest
Today’s Practice
  • Coaches always want pace but every once in a while are going to slow it down and teach
  • Video is great but sometimes need to feel it; thinks they have to do that more; need to explain to guys why they are doing these things
  • For some reason, they gravitate to the boards a lot and instead of the middle of the ice
  • Will get a lot of reps

Not sure if Pedey will play tomorrow due to roster stuff? What does that even mean?

If Toc doesn't want to play Pedey he better have a DAMN good reason.

Depends on how they want to handle activating Juulsen & Joshua. Currently at 22/23 so can activate one but if they activate both, someone else will need to be sent back. Karlsson would be the other candidate. What’s curious is you’d expect that decision to have happened today.

I'd lose my shit if D Petey comes out for f***ing Juulsen

This intense distrust towards young players seems to be ubiquitous...

Pretty big game. A win gets us a point behind the final wild card spot and also separates us a bit from the teams below. So in true Canuck fashion we all get an otl to enjoy

I don't get to legally enjoy the game tonight. I'll be blacked out being in Missouri. I will of course never use an internet stream. That would be wrong.

Not saying that he shouldn't work on this, but I feel like this is the kind of coaching that turns a 100 pt forward who likes to deke people into oblivion and can score on a wicked wrister from anywhere, into a plug who tries to be the net front presence and uses butt checks to affect the game. Next up, videos of how one supreme power forward named Rick Tocchet used to score goals in the 80's.

My counter argument, and I do like Pettersson a lot and don't really want to see him traded, is that he went through a similar slump in 2021-22 where he had 68 points in 80 games. If this was an isolated thing where he was a dominant forward and then only regressed under Tocchet, then I'd give more credence. Even if Tocchet/system was to blame, the drop off would be closer to 80 points.

Tocchet is right in that Pettersson doesn't attack the middle of the ice. Given Petterssons lack of speed burst in the neutral or offensive zones, maybe this is a smart counter to that. Can't, unwilling, or whatever to use his speed to create separation and instead get to the interior and create chances that way.

Yeah, I'm not saying that this is EP's only issue. It's kind of all snowballed on him. I do feel, however, we are not playing him to his strengths at all with the way Tocc coaches. Huge reason why I want to see EP at the 4 Nations with a different coach. I'm hoping the just turns back into old Petey by the end of the tournament.

Most workplaces are not gonna put a 22 year old fresh out of college in charge of anything major, tbf

I understand, but if a rookie showed promises on his debut, does it not make sense to reward his effort and result with another game in a similar role?
