Looking at teams in the other division, their schedules and line ups. Also they are improving, slowly but there are now 5 teams within 5 points for the last WC spot. Is that the goal, the purpose of the entire season to just make the playoffs, that's all? They would be team struggling to make that spot. They just lost to Buffalo in a scheduled win for them. They haven won enough games in regulation to win the cup, 16. If you took half the loser points away 5 points, they are in 27th in the league.
A lot of these other team have cap space and deeper prospect pools to improve their teams, hell Calgary has 7 draft picks in the first two rounds over this and next year, 4 first's, they could offer up and they are definitely in a win for the fans mode and their room is having fun. Utah has an embarrassment of riches.
With this team's current reputation of issues which player will waive to come here? Even FAs in summer?

I have it on good authority that Myers has already been arrested and McDavid has been the secret president all along. JFK JR is going to reveal himself at the opening faceoff to rescind McDavid’s suspension and add three games to Myers. Many people are talking about this.
 


Capitilizing on McDavid Being Out
  • Huge for the Canucks; is the best player in the league
  • Myers is a big minute guy and need a committee on defence to make up for him

  • Have talked about yo-yoing between games; need consistency and urgency
  • Need a bit more urgency from people; they know it but need to stop saying it and go do it
  • There’s 5’ out there that they can get and have to demand that 5’
  • A lot of good stuff that’s happened and a lot that is self inflicted
  • Need to start tonight
Hughes
  • Does it every night; rarely has an off night
  • No indecision in his game
  • Takes it upon himself; almost wants to carry the team on his back and need to be careful with that because he can’t do it alone
  • His mindset and his days off are about making himself better
  • Hopes his efforts translates to the rest of the team
  • Need players that inspire each other and Hughes does that
Vasili Podkolzin
  • Talked to Paul Coffey when they first traded Podkolzin and told Coffey that he’s a great kid and sees a lot of creativity
  • Is a powerforward with a good shot
  • Has really enjoyed watching him play
  • Cheer for a kid like that; he’s a great kid
Line-Up
  • Demko starting
  • Not quite sure if Karlsson will play
  • Same defence
Drama as a Coach
  • Has to be careful because you sometimes spend too much on one thing and don’t coach other players as much
  • Need to pick and choose what to focus on
  • Become stronger as a team through adversity
  • Has been involved in three Stanley Cup teams and there’s always been some confrontation during those years
  • Getting a little bit more of their share and need to come out of it positive
Desharnais
  • Has improved the last 2-3 weeks; struggled early on
  • Is moving his feet and has a good stick
Emotion in the Game
  • Glad they are playing this game; especfially after their performance against the Sabres
  • They need this
  • Have to embrace these games; have to want to play against a heated rival
  • Games that mean nothing suck
  • These are the games you play hockey for

So they are just calling Pettersson up a day then sending him down for his good performance I assume? Abby plays tomorrow in Arizona and again on Sunday, so maybe he's playing with the big team on Saturday? I don't know if it's a good way to ease him in the lineup playing him against the capitals (the best team according to the standings).

We don’t have any extra forwards/D, and with some illness going around the team, makes sense to bring these two to Edmonton just in case. Quick trip.

Even at 95, Calgary is the only one that wouldn’t have to go on a similar run to the Canucks. They would need 44 of a possible 74 (.595), while St.Louis would need 45 of 68 (.662). But even with Calgary playing well, I just don’t see them making a win-now move. Their season wasn’t supposed to be competitive. The Caps made the playoffs with 91 points last year. I think we’re going to see something similar in the West.

I agree that just making the playoffs shouldn’t be the only goal, and if they’re going to just get trounced in the playoffs then it’s probably better to miss. But then I don’t think focusing on their end of year point totals should really matter in that case. If they end up with 98 points, but are still playing like they have been recently, then I’m not sure if it’s any different than getting in with 92, because either way they’re still not going anywhere. At this point, the question is more about whether they can actually get things turned around. If their best players other than Hughes can start to actually get going and they can build some momentum going into the playoffs that’s the real goal imo.

The entire Oilers team has not mentioned that they are out to get Garland. Perry did talk about that kind of stuff happening in the past.

Going after Garland is not a good hockey tactic but Hughes, that's different because it makes good hockey sense and is part of the game.

IMO Tocchet didn't split the defence to make the team better, he did it so Hughes had a big guy as his line mate.

It's all part of the game right? Checks will be finished, face washing might be done like Garland did, while holding the stick (butt end)

Tocchet took pains to poke the bear a little hoping to get the Oliers to overreact but I think they will just play a very heavy game and the Canucks will take a lot of retaliation penalties, Soucy especially or whoever is Hughes partner.

There will be intention of hurting a player but if they get crushed by a late hit like Sherwood does well, we all saw Hughes evaporate in the playoffs and that was legal game play.

Nurse might let Garland bet him to the puck a few times or some other dman.

The Oilers don't have to win this game, they don't NEED the points to make the real season.
The Canucks do, they will need around 48 points and there are only 70 pts available. They can't lose more than 5 regulation games to have a sniff.
For the Oilers this might a a "message" game to the rest of the league that if the refs won't police the game they will not tolerate their stars being jumped, held and tackled.
No cross checks but a very heavy game, they have time to recover from any unfortunate injuries that might occur or suspensions that could come. The Canucks can't have any top half of the team players out of the lineup

The score, I don't think it is going to matter all the talk will be about the reffing

Some Coilers fans are absolutely mental. They're furious at Garland for triggering McRatface's tantrum, which ultimately led to him finally being held accountable. The thought of retaliation is ridiculous, yet I've seen this discussed a lot.
 
Oilers, without McD, made it very close against the Capitals. They won't take us lightly. They probably want to ram it down our throats after our last game.
 
Selfishly I want them to lose this game because I’m going to the game on Saturday and if we win tonight obviously we will lose the next game

McD sometimes overshadows Draisaitl.
But a motived Draisaitl with 4 pts tonight is very possible.
