Some all situations data:

Canucks through 46 games last season - 140 xGA, 117 GA.

Canucks through 46 games this season - 129 xGA, 145 GA.

If they kept up the same rate of outperformance compared to expected goals this year, they’d have 108 GA, or 37 fewer.

xGA isn’t going to capture everything, and the team would have given up more opportunities against if they were leading more often, but we are also seeing what happens when you go from elite goaltending to below average (Lankinen has been average-ish, Silovs and Demko have been bad).

As many were saying, they were PDO merchants for the first 50 games last season.

This year, nearly everything is going wrong. And they're still in the playoff mix. There is an upside case here.

Yeah, though the flip side is that this team’s path to being a true contender in the short term really hinged on having elite goaltending to backstop them.

Without that it’s hard to see a reasonable path to building up the skater group to the point where they can carry a below average or even an average goalie to being a top team, especially if they trade Miller.

Feel like figuring out if Demko can get back there is the most important question for the back half of the season.

Must watch TV. If my theory about our coaching being pretty much non-existent and players have to self-motivate and self-organize and usually do it well against opponents they don't like is correct, then it should be a pretty competitive game.

I fully expect the Oilers to come out throwing cheapshots and playing dirty, and the refs won't call a thing because of all the complaining their team and media did in the past week (plus home team advantage). And then when the Canucks retaliate they'll get penalized.

Canucks assignment this season is just to beat the Leafs and Oilers.
Then piss away all the "easy" 2 points against every other team.

Kinda funny how Oilers release a statement supporting Mcdavid but nothing for Bouchard whom actually took some lumber in the chops. What a crazy world we live in.
