Yeah, that's a fair point, but i do think there's too much of it that Tocchet thinks will lead to success when it's not going to be the case.
I think Garland is an exception as his golden boy and Garland has no problem getting in guys' faces and going anywhere he needs to despite not being big enough to hit anyone. Not Petterssons game, never will be, and really doesn't need to be.
It is why we see PDG in there as much as we do though. Despite the fact he doesn't do too much else. Boeser has added more of that element to his game, especially before he got concussed this year. It's kind of dropped off since. And he puts up points so he's not sitting.
Time will tell with Lekk.

It's probably best suited for a 90s Jacques Lemaire trap/Minnesota trap. Lots of miss sized defensive forwards and defence that needs protecting. It still lacks speed to capitalise on mistakes and the defenders are mostly terrible but should have constant protective.
So how many times does he have to take accountability before something changes???

I hear what your saying with the talk and game style of wanting players to not make high risk plays at the blue lines but at least Tocchet uses a 2 man forecheck unlike some teams when the game is up for grabs.
I dont think he's asking anyone to change their games just be hard on pucks. If Heinen and Suter can play the way they do and keep rolling out every shift he's not instructing Pettersson to play like someone he's not
As i outlined and others. Last year we were shooting the lights out with everyone healthy the Joshua Blueger Garland trio saving our bacon many games Demko stonewalling a harmonious group and a deep capable defense in our zone and at the blue line in support with one of if not the best top pairs in the NHL.
Now we got players struggling to score, a slew of man games lost, no Demko No Hronek, Pettersson playing as a 65pt scorer, Miller and Hughes playing hurt and that ghastly trio of Juulsen Forbort and Desharnais murdering possession offense and even sucking at defending off the rush. Myers and Soucy have been hit by a bus and without Lankinen playing as well as he has and Debrusk Sherwood coming of aid we would be with Detroit and the New York teams in the standings.
For as much shit as we give Myers in all seriousness the guys almost 35 and should get a fuxxing medal for the amount of lifting he's done and all that after what looked like a serious knee injury early on

As best I can recall, last year's team - at least in the first half when they were really going - was impressively relentless on the forecheck and very good at supporting the forecheck to create a second layer of pressure. They came at teams in waves, and when the puck came loose there was a guy right there to help pounce on it, and everyone rotated well to support.
That's part of how a limited but consistently hard-working player like DiGiuseppe was so effective before he got hurt, because all he had to do was focus on getting after the puck carrier to create mistakes and there'd be someone else right behind him to swoop in and help make something happen. Contrast to this year where if F1 does manage to break a puck loose on the forecheck, they also then have to figure out how to make some kind of disjointed play happen out of it, and everyone else seems to always be late to the party or positioning themselves too poorly for a quick play to get the puck moving out of the quagmire.
There seems to be a real problem with execution among the forwards, and it's tough to know if it's rooted in a lack of commitment, just plain inability to physically get to the right spots, or general disarray due to the constant injury-induced jumbling and everything else that comes with being a team that isn't clicking.
This team is going nowhere with this defence and the more years pass, the more Mike Gillis is vindicated. It shows us that he did more with a less talented and older core by giving us 5 consecutive seasons of playoff hockey. Rebuilding that old and slow canucks defence from 2008 was the cornerstone of those 5 consecutive years of playoffs. When we won, we did in style and we did not rely on the goalie to steal us game after game like Luongo did in 2007 and Marky/Demko.
We are in this situation now because Jimbo did not leave us with a good NHL defender outside of Hughes who we got by a miracle due to Ken Holland. We are missing that 2nd pair to play after H&H and we should have had it from drafting. You can't be garbage for 8 years and have only Hughes to show for. This is what is holding this core back from doing damage.
The bald bros made some mistakes but overall they've done a solid job trying to clean the mess. That's being said, they need to pull the trigger and pay the price for that 2nd pair else we will be a 1st round fodder for better teams.

Wow! Tocchet didn't throw his team under the bus post-game. But the inference was clear. His message: "Getting to the net is hard; getting the puck out of your own zone is hard; and winning puck battles is hard". And my job is get them more ready to battle".
