Post-Game Talk: [GM41] Canucks lose to Hurricanes | 0-2 | Pathetic Effort

Another game with a very low shot total.

14 shots.

I’d have zero issue firing Tocchet today, if it meant to never have to watch this boring hockey ever again.

29th in the NHL in shots/game.

Tail between your legs hockey.
It was the same in Phoenix. I'm all for two hundred foot hockey but this team is unwatchable at this point and with this talent it's unacceptable.

The defense is just so, so bad. From management's perspective, I can understand thinking that it would be fine until a mid-season trade (like Zadorov) would shore it up, but they've totally f***ed themselves with the construction. It seems like it's Tocchet/Foote asking for tree defensemen but I have no clue if that's what the front office wants, and one of the reporters should really ask someone high up once they're back in town.

We essentially have
- Group 1: Hughes
- Group 2: Myers and Forbort as the defensemen who can do ok in a pinch with 18-20 minutes a game
- Group 3: Soucy, Desharnais, Juulsen, Brannstrom - might be fine with 15 minutes a game.

Hronek is in Group 1 but injured, and Forbort should be in Group 3 but has played his way up to Group 2. Soucy should be in Group 2 but has somehow regressed badly to Group 3... and you can really only have like 1 of Group 3 if you hope to contend. And what makes it worse is that 2 and 3 are just filled with the exact same type of defenseman, and the only one who isn't hasn't played a game in 2025 for whatever reason.

Can't even be bothered to watch most of these games anymore. Dog shit effort most nights and this is often reiterated in the post game threads. What a letdown of a season following last.

I'm trading both Miller and Boeser pre tdl, once you move one it's way easier to move the other.

I'm not a huge ep fan but atleast he's younger and sometimes looks pretty good I guess.

This core is done. They had one shot and they blew it (technically two shots including the bubble).

Soucy going from a reliable #3 to a #5 was not in the cards for this season. Dude has been awful, and it doesn't make any sense.

Not a lot ways it plays out.

Roll it back again: maybe a wild card wipe. Assets devalue.

All of nothing. Sell futures and trade a star. Trying to win to keep Hughes. High risk but high reward. Catastrophic if it fails.

Blow it up: accept the stars all want out sell while you can to avoid getting Calgary meltdown syndrome you get robbed on trades for unhappy players.

I think they will want #2 but chicken out and be closer to #1. They have far too many bad contracts to move to create enough space to fix it.

I'm not sure they have any truly bad contracts...?

What I would do: Don't fire Tocchet. Give him the Dmen he needs to execute his system to his liking. If the team is still deal last in xGF by the end of the year with those Dmen in-house, then you have to make a change to the staff.

They could also just relieve Foote of his duties if it's him that is so focused on the trees. Tocchet appears to give him free reign on the DCorps.

At the deadline, try to target players on multi-year deals. This takes the pressure off from this year alone.

Honestly I think we have to give Tocchet d that he doesn’t want but can play the puck. Seems like the whole we want trees in the back is a Tocchet and Foote ask.

disagree. we didnt create enough offense last year either. i hate to say it, but PDO is a thing and it carried us into the playoffs
Yep.

PDO is a thing.

We didnt generate much last year either but shot at a insane rate.. that was to start the year. By the playoffs we were back to earth.

Yep... Tocchet's "come out flat, never recover, give up the blueline all game long, and don't shoot the puck" systems, have run it's coarse.

They've become so easy to defend because they are so predictable. They over pass like hell. Never shoot on the PP, or on oddman rushes. Once they actually do get set up, they just cycle the puck and give it to the zero-talent dmen who can't hit the side of a barn. The forwards don't create shit, so they basically just rely on the dmen to do all the shooting... but the blueline doesn't come close to having the personnel to play that way. They are deeply, systemically flawed, and Tocchet has no idea how to coach the group of players he has. It's game over man, it's game Over!

When it rains it pours. Canucks stuck in Carolina tonight

Patrick Johnston mentioned this could be a possibility before the Canes game

if you gotta get stuck at an airport because of weather you can do way worse than rdu. that airport punches way above it's weight

(i know the canucks aren't gonna be sleeping on benches in the airport, it's a joke, ok?)

It's more death by 1000 cuts. One on it's own won't kill you but a bunch will. If you could remove up to 6 or 8 contracts without consequences I think the Canucks could probably fill that quota. There's about $20m next I think I'd free up if it could.

Whatever happened to this team around the ASG last year, that was the end. They still went to the playoffs on the back of an incredible first half of the season but we all know how they looked there, barely able to scrape up 20 shots a game. I'd love to know what happened and who is responsible because this is so crushing as a fan. I really thought this team has figured it out.
This team was run and gun then we played the Oilers and Tocchet wanted them to play more defensive structure.
Crash and bang defensive game is not for a lot of these players .You see them struggling with what Tocchet wants them to play.Dam we had a good pp when Petty was playing with Kuzmenko..and because Kuzmenko could not buy into the defensive game he was gone.
The shit defense and Tocchets system is why we are playing like shit .
