Right now, players and management know the other won't be saving the season. The players don't have the talent and management can't risk losing assets in a lost cause.

109% right on December. Management failed the team in December. You can see the effort dying by the game.

Can't just dump and change for 82 games. PP has for a long time, been nothing but a couple slow, tired attempts at entry or set plays.

Players need to have some fun to skate hard, they want to put up big numbers. Too much focus on an old fashioned 'right way' just leads to a team that doesn't spend any time outside of their own zone.

The problem is coaching... Rick has in multiple post games talked about guys being in spots... when the puck is here, this guy has to be over there. when its down low, you have to be in front of the guy here.
i strongly suspect that the system Rick has them playing leaves no room for 'cheating'. when a player is 99% sure the puck is going to make it past the first forchecker maybe he should just BOOK IT if the first winger has C support. think about the game you just watched, every time Van has stable possession, he's either dead still, or has minimal speed an someone is on him.
You cant be creative with or without the puck if you have no wiggle room to push forward. Team success (as rare as it is) has come from individual efforts so far ... they need to change up their system and get a bit more Marc Crawford - off to the races type mindset.

That play where Lekkerimaki was skating the puck up and the 2 CAR defenders closed gap at their blueline and forced him to dump and chase, I thought yeah, that does not bode well.

This is the system. It doesn't look like the team is able to put opposing defenders on their heels. Everything is well contained in front of them.

Tocchet saying players weren't moving their feet. No, they are but they're starting too far back because the D can't pass the puck. It's not execution. Unless they haven't played the way you want for over a year...

This season sucks so far.

Feels like a Benning era season where it’s half way through the season and it feels like you’re already looking forward to next year.

Every team took notice last year and would have studied it. When someone wins the jack Adams they get studied even more.

The 2nd half of last season, and the playoffs, the team seemed to win in spite of a poor game plan.

The offense completely fell off a cliff. One of the worst in the league over that time frame, but we still had a few players at their best, at key moments, and goaltending.

They could have easily been swept by Nashville playing the way they did. It was desperate, late game heroics that saved them.

I agree. Offensively the system is very flawed, I also think Tocchet asking for players to hold onto puck is fine but makes the team predictable, by then you allow the goalie and defense to get set.

Tocchet always says the Canucks don't create enough chaos in the offensive zone but it's extremely difficult to do that against a set defense other than the typical point shot with traffic.

The Predators and Oilers knew exactly how to limit the offense in the playoffs.
 
Somebody in the post-game scrum asked Tocchet why his team generates SOG at rate that's one of the lowest in the entire NHL. I mean how can you possibly justify 14 SOG against a tired team like the Hurricanes?

But the answer was alarming. He blamed it a lack of 'puck pursuit' and forechecking. Miller, Pettersson and Hughes each had close to 100 points last season, but this dump and chase style is what the coach has them playing.

And he praised the 'bottom five'. Nothing against guys like Sasson, Blueger, Suter, Heinen and Di Giuseppe but all those guys might have trouble scoring in the American Hockey League right now.

Something has to give here.

Well... that was a colossal failure from pretty much every point of view.

The current version of the Canucks reminds me a lot of the Oilers last year before they fired Jay Woodcroft. Just complete ineptitude and a dysfunctional team.

Tocchet's system sucks, he isn't making any adjustments at all. It's all dump and chase and get 15 shots on goal and hope to win a game. Team sucks and worst of all is no fun to watch at all. Sure you can blame the defence but IMO that is an easy out. The forwards aren't doing anything in the offensive zone, bobbling pucks, getting shots blocked, missing the net. The PP has been brutal for what... almost 1 year?

Not sure where to go from here - fire Tocchet, fire sale, stay the course? Whatever it is, this team doesn't look like it can even make the playoffs let alone do any damage come April. We have what, 5 wins in our last 18 games? That's like Chicago/Anaheim levels of bad

Brutal season. Let it end already. Bring on the offseason

They were trying to do what you suggested. It's a stifling system that Carolina plays, and they played it well tonight. Combine that with our poor puck movement on the back end and players only recently trying to cheat up ice for more neutral zone speed and not being used to it yet, and you get this kind of an abomination of a game that the dead puck era would find distasteful.

Not a lot ways it plays out.

Roll it back again: maybe a wild card wipe. Assets devalue. Hughes starts noting the exit location.

All of nothing. Sell futures and trade a star++. Try to win to keep Hughes. High risk but high reward. Catastrophic if it fails.

Blow it up: accept the stars all want out sell while you can to avoid getting Calgary meltdown syndrome where you get robbed on trades for unhappy players.

I think they will want #2 but chicken out and be closer to #1. They have far too many bad contracts to move to create enough space to fix it. IMHO based on the effort level the stars, other than Hughes, have mentally moved on to next season/team, their bodies are just going through the motions.

I never thought I would say this after last year but a coaching change seems inevitable.

This team has become the most boring, no risk team since the 2010 wild.

I'm not one to overreact but my God I have turned off more games recently than at any other time because you know exactly what the outcome is going to be.

This team has either lost all their offensive talent or they are being choked by a boring system.
