Post-Game Talk: [GM41] Canucks lose to Hurricanes | 0-2 | Pathetic Effort

Stop playing the same shitty defenseman. There is zero down side to calling somebody up from AHL when there is such a low bar to clear.

Stop running the same crap out there and expecting different results.

Yea. Others have said “what does another AHL player do?” but right now the defense os so bad in transition it’s worth a f***ing shot

Whatever happened to this team around the ASG last year, that was the end. They still went to the playoffs on the back of an incredible first half of the season but we all know how they looked there, barely able to scrape up 20 shots a game. I'd love to know what happened and who is responsible because this is so crushing as a fan. I really thought this team has figured it out.

As for the actual game, pretty brutal. Limited a good team to a few chances but created basically nothing, especially 5-on-5. That give-and-go Pettersson and Garland worked early in the game was about all.

Pettersson, Garland and Hughes looked like the only players capable of making a play. Miller, Boeser, Debrusk were all brutal.

At no point did the Canes look like they were playing a B2B with travel / 5th game in 7 nights which means the Canucks did not work hard enough.

All the D-men other than Hughes can't get a shot through, can't make a play, can't make a pass under pressure. Multiple times this game Forbort had time and space and he just blindly threw the puck into an area where there was no Canuck in sight, it was cringe.

As always I'm not blaming the D-men for being inept, they are doing what they can. Management needs to fix their shit.

You remember when Colorado went through a period were they transitioned out Ryan O'Reilly, Matt Duchene and Paul Stastny? They fortunately lucked into drafting Nathan MacKinnon and the Makar years later but they did a good job of finding a supportive cast around them.

This core ain't it. Miller, Boeser and Pettersson may go onto different teams and win a Stanley Cup but these guys will not win here. Too many losing seasons have done their damage.

Hughes is just magic to watch, especially when almost everybody on the ice with him is so out of whack with each other. Garland is Garland, Blueger is reliably reliable, both of them have muffins for shots, sadly. Myres is still everybody's favorite scapegoat but is still playing quite well for the most part IMHO, Juulsen is second on that list and ditto. Sherwood gives me hope as does Suter. The bit players are doing their, er, bits , even Brisebois made a triumphant return to the big club (which says volumes about how thin we are at the blue line although, still, good for him). Otherwise we are a completely disfunctional team. Miller is now a problem child who should be jettisoned, preferably to the Rangers who deserve him. Hughes should go to the Devils for a kings ransom (he deserves it and the NHL would do cartwheels of joy and maybe view this franchise with less of a jaundiced eye). Petey can go anywhere, again for majopr assets. Boeser should be destined for Minny, again for high yield. Then start again. Sucks but it's the only way and if our GM team is any good we could build a dynasty. If they are bums it will be Benning V 2.0...

It's not a valid argument to say "who do we replace them with?" when they're all f***ing terrible. Because the product we have been putting on the ice is so close to greatness LOL. At some point you have to sit people because the team needs accountability. If key players are floating, it sucks the life out of the rest of the guys. Why should a guy like Sherwood put his body on the line if half the team isn't even trying? We've already heard that some guys are not playing the system or doing some of the gameplans that coaching staff has proposed. It's a disease that worms its way into the team and IMO that's why you see pathetic efforts like this.

One issue with the modern NHL is this obsession with LH/RH on the d-pairs even if it means playing inferior players. I remember Philly back when they made the SCF had NO RHS on D.

I mean, it is when we literally don't have alternatives. I'm all for benching Soucy for a game or two, but it isn't like Brannstrom has been playing any better. Scratching Boeser so we can rotate Hoglander back in who hasn't done shit all season. In an ideal world, I'd say call up D Pettersson, however I'd rather not risk his development tossing him in games he's not ready for because Desharnais can't skate faster than Rutherford walks.

We also tried Brannstrom on his off side. He was brutal. I mean, at this point trying it again wouldn't kill us, but it's not going to help us if he simply can't play right side.

I'm calling out the calling out of "effort" though. Too often in sport, "good effort"/"bad effort" is just "did the team exceed or not exceed your expectations today". I didn't see any "bad effort" plays that seemed particularly notable today. I'm sure some of the examples of poor effort today could easily be found in games that we won too.

The reality is over the past year we've seen plenty of these games where we can barely get a shot on net and where we look hopeless without Hughes on the ice. We won a play-off game with 12 shots! Did we show lack of effort that day? Of course not, because we won.

This a team that thanks to years and years of poor management has, in particular, a very poorly constructed defense which greatly impacts our ability to move the puck. Throw in a coach that for better or for worse prefers a defensive system and you'll get games like this, particularly when the shooting luck doesn't happen (no, I do not buy that we've been anything but lucky with 5on5 shooting percentage over the last season and a half. it's just how it goes.). it's a terribly tricky position for management. luckily the rest of the conference is no good, so that last wildcard spot is still on track.

Lekkerimaki makes good on his second chance or Pettersson scores on the PP and this is a different game.

This team has no confidence offensively because they generate so little, have no rush chances, and there are no secondary shots due to breakdowns. It's robotic. They're lead-footed. No one believes anymore that they can break the game open, and so they don't.

Bottom6 played well.

Hughes was fine. Myers was a mixed bag, but still better than the remaining D Corps.

Replace Garland with DeBrusk on PP1.

Boeser sucked tonight. Just a flat out terrible game.

People had a problem with Heinen, but at least he was in an around the play. The bottom6 was ok overall.

Juulsen... my goodness. What is Foote thinking?

Pettersson looked good. Demko wasn't bad.

Wasn’t Tocchet saying that they weren’t just going to fling it on net and this is basically his system? And did we even make more than 3 passes in a row?

Did he ever say it? I don't really recall that but happy to be wrong.

I think we need to get back to the important question arising from the game

Rod 'the bod' Brind'Amour vs Rick "RikTok" Tocchet.

I might go with the wisdom of Jake the Muss and take Rod. "Too much weights not enough speed work."

Glad I missed the third period. Yikes.

It feels like a game of hurry up and wait for Allvin to perform some surgery on this roster. Question is whether it’s minor or major.

Management should’ve done something back in December. This team is leaking so bad, they are sitting on their asses.

With this poor performance, Aquaman is gonna start ranting and raving soon.

I don't even know where we go from here. I know I was one of the first around here to turn on Tocchet but even now I feel bad for the guy. Probably has the worst defense in the entire league to work with. Combined with the fact all our "stars" minus Hughes routinely look disengaged.

Personally I'd sell anyone you don't plan on bringing back next season and get some nice draft picks. Restock the cupboard and make a big change in the offseason and a UFA splash. Go into next season with the intention to compete with a restocked prospect pool.

I'm 50/50 on Tocchet at the moment especially with a contract year/option. Obviously he's not coming back for just one season so you either get rid of him or lock him up for 3 plus.

Just an all around horrible situation and complete 180 from last year.

Even with Hronek back we are still really screwed. I think Boeser is probably a great dude but they gotta try for a top 4 dman. I'm not ready to give up on Miller or Peter yet.
