Mike Gillis just walked by and is joining the Sekeres & Price show... quick summary:

-Is playing golf (and getting better at it), fly fishing
-Trying to buy a team in Switzerland with a group
- Re: dealing with the drama surrounding this Canucks team. Says you have to build leadership in the room, says Twins got lots of criticism when he came in. Lots of people sceptical that Twins could be leaders but put in players to support them.
-Says current situation with Canucks has seem to festered for a long time. Gillis would've intervened much earlier. Says he had a great relationship with players and some came to him when there were issues. Was all about team mentality
-Says Petey is a premier player, lots of upside. Thinks he's a guy you build around. Entering his prime. Would try to work through whatever he's going through with him
-Says NMC comes with alot of drama and difficulty. Had a lot of respect for Luongo but there are ways to work around it. Says there were trades on the table that Lu nixed. Ultimately he got to choose where he went and mgmt respected that. Worked out well and happy he got to win a cup. Lu was a class act through and through. Great teammate. Nothing bad to say about him at all.
- No one expected Markstrom to become a star except Melanson

BTW, the guy is still sauve AF. I miss him. Seems like he was the last GM to have our teams back

Again, they play different sides. In Tocchet's world, this is like replacing an apple with an orange.
Off tangent, but I've always hated apples vs. oranges related sentiments in general and it's a big pet peeve of mine (this isn't even directed at this situation, btw). You can replace an apple with an orange. You can equally compare an apple to an orange. Only the most tunnel-vision, rigid, misguidedly check-box-y way thinking would result in someone going "Hurr.... but how will I compare unless it's the exact same thing with the exact same parameters?"

It’s really too bad his relationship with other gms was seemingly shitty. I think he could’ve turned it around if he had the opportunity

Gillis hasn't worked as a GM since Aquilini canned him. Means one of two things, given how many times in the NHL GM's and coaches are fired and re-hired.

Either Gillis is 'unhireable' or he'd rather just fish and play golf. Normally a guy who led a team to a President's Trophy and a trip to the Cup Finals, would have his pick of jobs after a year or so on the sidelines.

But after more than a decade out of commission, I guess Gillis' days as a GM are over.

His plan for the Penguins leaked when he interviewed there. He wants a lot of power and to be more of a team president with a large staff with a a pricey payroll for that staff I'm guessing.

Not many owners are willing to commit to that. I'm 100% confident that he would've got a GM job if he was more of a typical GM.

I would of liked to see him get another opportunity - would have been interesting to follow

I don't know where this idea came from. He was voted GM of the year by other GM's.

By all accounts Gillis only wanted to be team president, not a GM. Then he created this kinda odd idea of having a parallel structure in the management team so you don't miss any blind spots or something. Seemed like a hard sell. His recent stint with the NHLPA won't help him.

He pissed off the old boys network and Burke. Burke had and still does have an enormous amount to "respect" in the league, he got the Luongo rule pushed through which made Luongo and several other contracts illegal retroactively.

Media saying Washington is sick, ill. Canucks could get sick/ill next from playing them.

Lou "won a Cup" as a hanger on, not as a player. Bugs me when people say this like he won one playing goal...

Not expecting a W, but hopefully they don't get blown out and physically abused.

Fact he never got another GM role is absolute insanity.

Gotta respect him not just taking any job or bending on his requirements/philosophies just to get back in.

I assume he has enough money or other opportunities to not just take the job because of the money or because "there's only 32 of these jobs out there".

Always found it hilarious how some people would defend Benning by saying the Frankenbuild was never his plan, he was just doing whatever the owner wanted. And I don't know what's worse: the "plan" being Benning's fault or it being Aquilini's fault and Benning deciding to just go along with it even though it was going to butcher his career.
