Honestly, it’s feeling like a start of a new rebuild. Pettersson has disappeared for a year now and is way to weak mentally, Miller hasn’t looked the same this year, Demko is done, Boeser is likely gone.
Honestly this was what was supposed to happen.
The damage that the Benning regime did wasn't meant to be fixed in just a couple of years.
Many people thinking long term correctly identified that by the time the Canucks turned things around, they'd have to trade guys like Pettersson and Boeser because they wouldn't be able to contend during their primes.
But then Miller turned out to be way better than we expected.
And then Hughes turned out to be better than we expected (nobody was expecting him to be the best defenceman in the entire league).
And then Demko turned out to be a Vezina caliber goaltender.
And all of a sudden we thought we could contend. And had things shaken out differently last season, we could've made a run.
But the reality of things is that the Benning era was always going to take the better part of a decade to recover from and there's a chance that we end up having to rebuild with a new core before we can consider ourselves contenders again.
That being said, I will be very sad if we lose Hughes, he's just such a joy to watch.
