Very good effort by the team. Lot of people came to play in this one and there were some surprisingly good work out of some of the lesser lights on the team. Would have been awful to have lost after the play of many of the players

Good

Hoglander - maybe his best game of the season. Hustled every shift and created turnovers in the offensive zone. Just wish he could have scored but there was a lot more determination in his play and much better control of the puck. Neutral zone play was very much improved over most of his past efforts

Joshua - got himself central to the play and moved the puck well. Most encouraging aspect of this game was the play of Joshua and Hoglander. If they can raise their game makes this teams future a good deal better.

Sassons- not every shift was a masterpiece but continues to be at least adequate which is a huge step for this player to take. Seems to have the speed and IQ necessary to play at this level.

Myers - far from perfect but he was a force in this game. In the past he has stepped up his game in the absence of others and has largely done this with Hughes and Hronek out. Was covering alot of ground in this game and scored an important goal. Up to near 26 minutes in this game and big part of the win. Time for some to stop scapegoating him. Why just look for mistakes when he is, right now, critical to the team's success.

Juulsen - another who stepped up his game. Probably lacks the tools to do much on a continuing basis but he was fine in his end and did push the play in the ofensive zone at times.

Desharnais - I've been very negative about this player (and been justified in that I believe) but when he plays like he did in this game, you get a glimmer of hope that he might be okayish. Trouble with players like him is that when they make mistakes they are usually horrendous ones. Tonight he was getting the puck up and out of his zone quite well.

Demko - outside of the first goal was very important in keeping the team in it early.

Lankanin - looked unbeatable in the shoot out and was excellent overall in coming off the bench.

Garland - at this point the best player on the team. Would take him over Miller and I don't think it's close. Another great effort. Is setting the tone for the team. Think I would put him on the American team ahead of Miller.

Bad

Boeser - Not his kind of game. Tight checking end to end game were speed was important, Canucks lost momentum everytime his line came on the ice. Getting to be an automatic trade at the deadline if the team is out of it. Just can't afford a player who becomes baggage like he was tonight and is too often

DeBrusk - Can see what Boston fans saw in this game. Lost every one on one fight for the puck and did a lot of floating. Can simply disappear without service. Also made you note how Pettersson has been sacrificing offense to cover back for DeBrusk. Without Pettersson holes in his defensive game become more evident.

Others

Miller - obvious his shoot out goal was important. However, also points out that Miller, right now and likely due to injury, does best when the play slows down or when he has more time to do things. His skating is not up to previous standard and one result is he ends up taking bad penalties as he tries to control others reaching with his stick rather than moving his feet

Heinen - should not be used on the PK. Team has better options. His line had some success in this game but I think that was mostly due to other players on it.

With the Demko out and Miller struggling the team now has their 4 best players either out or playing seemingly hurt. What could go wrong has gone wrong. Winning games like tonight's keeps them in it, but you do have to wonder just how long they can keep their chances alive.

Some got on me for saying at the end of last season that Demko was injury prone, but doubt any one can argue against that now.

JT Miller finished with the LEAST amount of 5v5 ice time for the #Canucks tonight in what was a very competitive game…

Everything right now is MILLER VS. PETTERSSON but those numbers simply indicate that Tocchet wasn't in love with that whole line tonight - wasn't like Boeser or Debrusk were getting extra shifts.

Edit : also Miller took a couple penalties so missed a couple rotations because of that.

Players play hurt all the time. Every player ever will say how they are injured for pretty much the entire season. It's about whether the injury could get worse, how much rest will fix it, and pain tolerance.

Yeah, OMG CANUCKS MEDICAL STAFF SCREWED UP AND LET THAT GUY PLAY has become this whole meme here but we don't do anything different than any other team other than being under the microscope of a Canadian market. Every team has multiple guys playing with some sort of thing all the time. The endless whinging about this stuff is so dumb.

Tonight’s Game
  • Gutsy effort; disappointing to give up the lead but the team stuck
together
  • Were really scrappy tonight
  • Hoglander played well; whole Sasson line was good
  • A lot of good efforts from a lot of guys
  • Have been in a lot of one-goal games and it’s nice to be on the other side of it
  • Gives some guys confidence
  • You take the win
  • Hard effort and they deserved it
Demko
  • Had some back spasms
  • Doesn’t think it’s serious and could take a day or two
Lankinen
  • Has been in a tough spot all season; got to love the kid
Hoglander & his line
  • Had talked to him today; Hoglander told Tocchet that he needs to get back to his identity
  • Deserved to play in OT
  • His line with Sasson had two big early shifts for them; Canucks weren’t prepared to play and that line got the team in the game
  • Credits that line for the win
Brisebois
  • For a guy that’s been out for a long time, he’s battled back
  • Is proud of him
  • Hasn’t played an NHL game for 2 years

If you have to play 5 minutes less a night to manage the issue.

Being 5v5 that also excludes his OT time. The fact he got a bunch of ice time there suggests there wasn’t an issue.

Garland will justifiably get a lot of praise but the whole middle six was strong.

I thought Blueger and especially Suter played well. I think it’s going to tough for the team to let Suter walk this summer with the versatility/PK utility he brings.

Sherwood with another six hits tonight.

I'm at the point where I want to watch a montage of every moment Blueger is on the PK.
