I think with Petey there are two things going on. First, lots of people just don't like his personality because they cannot relate to him. Personally, I don't have a problem with his personality, but I've always liked, from a personality perspective, the less conventional hockey players (e.g., Sedins, or Wellwood).
But second, he's also just been horrible since he signed his mega deal. And sure, you can argue ad nauseum as to why he's been horrible, but the fact of the matter is, excuses will only get you so far when the difference between cap hit and production is as large as it is with Petey. Like, yes, he may have an injury that's affecting him. And yes, the defense he plays with suck at moving the puck. But also, players that get pay 11.6 million dollars need to find a way to contribute at a much higher level even if injured, or even if not playing with optimal plays.
