Coaches coach, your job as a GM is to reign in your coaches worst impulses. When your coach says "I want big defensemen that can clear the zone," you can't just be like "ok boss here's Forbert" and forget about the puck moving part of it.

There's countless examples of coaches being great coaches but terrible GMs - Trotz in Nashville is a classic current one.
