I just said hi to John Shorthouse! It's lame, but I'm a little starstruck lol
I was singing at a Salvation Army Christmas Kettle one Christmas about 10 years ago, outside the Safeway on 4th. One evening Jim Robson came along, dropped in a tenner, and sang a Christmas carol with me. The next evening John Shorthouse came by, dropped in a twenty. I told him Jim Robson had sung a song with me the night before. He said, "Not gonna happen."

Also met Matthieu Schneider at that location. He was with his grandpa. I made sure to be singing a Hannukah song as they were passing by. They stopped and gave some money, and then his grandpa told me the filthiest joke I have ever heard. To Schneider's mortification.

If the low shot totals weren’t converting into goals over 3 different seasons, or there were consistent zone time issues, I could see the argument for why it’s a bigger problem.

Last year they won the zone time battle but were poor at generating shots - it’s clearly a part of their system and has generated a top 10 goals rate, so I don’t see the issue outside of people wanting to win the model game on top of the real game.

I’ve been screaming about puck moving being an issue since last year regardless, because it was a massive problem last year in generating rush chances, and this year it’s so awful it’s impeding on their zone time.

The lack of puck movement is at once a model issue and a personnel issue. If your coach accepts negative shot differential and is risk averse to inner ice passing, he will defer to glass-and-out trees and rely on high conversion rates to save him. Granted, it worked last year... Until it didn't against the Oilers.

It's because their ceiling is lowered by the controlled system the play. Tocchet wants rush chances, sure, but he's not willing to accept to the risks to get it (Brannstrom's creativity). It's fine if all you want to do is control for your floor. As in, stay in games. But if you want to get the cup, you need shot generation. Tocchet's model isn't providing this.
