UPL and D'Accord would be the most recent comps I'd think. $4.5Mx4?
I would go 3 x 3. Going from $767k to $3 million would be a significant raise.

There's something about Thompson's style that looks shaky to me. But I'm no goaltending expert.
I don't see anything shaky about how he plays. He's a somewhat big goalie who is athletic. Just like Lindgren they look different because they catch with their right hand.

In your dreams.
You don't give a goalie $4.5 million per year where they have never played over 50 games in a season. While LT numbers have been fairly consistent, his two previous seasons he played 37 and 46 games. I think on LT's next contract, Stolarz 2x2.5 deal will be a bench mark to go by. While LT has played more games the last 2 seasons, his SV% has been lower than Stolarz.

You are not alone, I've seen this too. Feels like he maybe loses some pucks and plays here and there. Something about it that makes me a little skeptical about long term commitment. But at the same time he seems to be able to recover with his size and puckluck (when its going your way, the pucks will find you).

But then again, goaling around is atleast 80% about confidence and gaining the trust of the team in front of you. Winning every game you play is a good way to achieve that. LT is running hot.

Also feels like there have been a lot of posts hit against us in this 21 game scretch. Again, a lot to do with "feeling it".

A few of our key players will be due a nice raise. LT, CMM, JC6. Just throwing out random guesses. LT 5 mill cap hit, CMM around 7-8. JC6 could go over 8

We have another RFA year for CMM and Ovie contract ends at the same time.

Like Sami has been tweeting all season we should get to work on extending JC6 before we blow it. Im not sure I want to pay a goalie FA market price when we have other needs.

I am still of the belief that Chyrchun will be had for 7 to 7.5. His market is 8M to 8.5M. Good situations are hard to find and Jake (and his dad Jeff) know how important that is. He will take less than market to stay here. I’d love to see 7Mx8 years.

On Thompson I’d think term will be hard but 3 or 4 years would be good for both sides and he will be UFA at 30 or 31 and can still sign one more 4-5 year contract. Probably in the $4M range. 4Mx3 years is big jump and guaranteed stability.

CMM has another year left at 2.1M so let’s see his consistency. He isn’t an 8M player. I think closer to 6M. He could up that over the next 82-100 games.

Overall, I think we need to be careful about a lot of long term contracts. Chyrchun should get one. McMichael another. Dowd, JC74, Thompson, Fever probably in the 2-4 year range.

LT deserves a good raise, but not $5 million per year! Kuemper a bit over that amount and it failed. Caps aint gonna give that amount to a goalie who has even less of a track record.

The Cap is expected to jump up to 95-97 million, and it’s expected to keep going up from there.

I think our guys will be getting even more than their comparables this offseason. Especially if they keep playing this well.

I think it’s one of the reasons we were able to get these one-year left contracts for so cheap. It’s going to be a competitive offseason.

This is a fair point. We have been dealing with flat cap for so long with a bit of jump the last couple of years, what today is a 7-8M contract, might be a 9-10M contract.

There are 17 players in the NHL whom make 10M+ (2 are goalies). The Caps don’t have any. OV at 9.5M is 26, Backstrom at 9.2M and PLD is 47 at 8.5M. I don’t see a $10M player in our immediate (next 2 years) future. This means we can have a fair number of 6-8M contracts. And we have a lot of youth who are cost controlled. In fact, it may be hard for us to get to the Cap ceiling, but that is most important for LTIR purposes and hopefully after Backstom and TJ retire we won’t be as in dire need.

I still think they should go hard after Marner. Both to play with Ovi in his last year to make sure he gets 895 and to replace his production when he hangs ‘em up?

Besides Backy and Oshie after this season Ovi and Carlson’s contract will also run out and re-signing the latter will be a tougher decision to make with him being 36 at the time it expires. So there could potentially be lots of cap space opening up in the next two years with the predicted cap raises ($92M at the minimum next year). Caps have $65,3M committed on 9F - 6D - 1G

Protas-Strome-Ovi
CMM-PLD-Wilson
Milano-X-Miro
Duhaime-X-X
X-X

X-Carlson
Sandin-Roy
Fehervary-TVR
Iorio

X-Stevenson

UFA’s:
Dowd, Raddysh, Bear, McIlrath, Eller, Vrana, Thompson, Lindgren

RFA:s, holding rights
Lapierre, Alexeyev, Leonard

So that’s $26,7M on 7 players with potentially 2 players north of $3M. If they sign Chychrun at 8x$7,5M and Thompson at 4x$3,5M they’ll still have $15M+ to sign a 3C, 4C, 4RW and 2 Extra F/D.
They’ll also have more wiggle-room if they move Milano ($1,9M) and maybe TVR ($3M), both will be on their last year of their contracts.

Players like Marner are very rarely available and neither Miro or Leonard will be close to offsetting Ovechkin’s production in the next few years.

For instance, this would be cap compliant.

Ovechkin-Strome-Marner (8yrsx12,5M)
McMichael-Dubois-Wilson
Protas-Lapierre (2yrsx1,5M)-Miro
Duhaime-Dowd (1yrx1,3M)-Leonard (975k)
Trinyev (775k)-Rybinski (775k)

Chychrun (8yrsx7,5M)-Carlson
Sandin-Roy
Fehervary-($2,75M Dman)
Iorio

Thompson (4yrsx3,5M)
Stevenson

And the year after (26-27) they’ll have the cap raise + Ovechkins cap hit + Carlson’s cap hit to either re-sign or replace Carlson and Fehervary. So the cap situation is actually scary good right now.

I’d be shocked if Marner isn’t back in Toronto
