Everybody talks about the missing guys up front.....but other than Forbort and Desharnais (who apparently can't play), there's nobody missing on the blueline.

And it simply isn't good enough. It wasn't good enough even before Boeser went down and Miller departed

And unfortunately their defense is going to cost them games this year. And if anything were to happen to Hughes or Hronek, then you can start following the entry draft rankings in earnest.

Given that the team was outmatched, I'm relieved that they weren't caved in on the scoreboard. Hope this keep their spirits up for the upcoming 6 game road trip.

We all know what Demko contributes at his best, but I have an even better appreciation for what Boeser has meant to this team.

Solid effort all things considered, but really wish this had come sooner on the homestand so they could've banked some more points. Only watched from the second period onwards (coaching earlier), but some thoughts from the first period highlights and observations from the 2nd on:

Garland: Great game, really stepped up today. Thought he had fallen back to earth a bit, but he showed up big time. They're going to need him these next couple weeks.

Petterson line: Sherwood is reminding me of when Matt Cooke stepped in for Todd Bertuzzi on the Naslund line after the Moore incident and went on a heater. Sherwood's been a tweener for a long time, dominating the AHL but never finding that gear in the NHL, but it looks like he's found it here. Petey also looks engaged and his vision is back.

Debrusk was giga meh, dude needs to start burying his chances and creating vs skating all over the ice & accomplishing nothing. If his shot was like Keifer's he'd have a couple more goals over the last little bit with the looks Petey has been giving him. His puck skills also aren't strong enough to be playing the half-wall on the PP, don't know what Tocchet was thinking there.

Hoglander: Contract looks dumber by the day. Given two of the top line players are out, it speaks volume the coach still has him on the fourth line. Is the first guy I'd look to deal to try and get defensive help.

Bains: Great effort today, time down in the AHL seems to have done him some good. Keeps progressing.

Lekk: Just way too weak out there. This is where people get confused on whether size matters. Garland's size? Not an issue, dude is an absolute dog on the puck and extremely strong on his skates. Lekk? Looks like the wind could blow him away. On the PP it shows up a lot, as even with a numbers advantage he has a really hard time winning any of his 1-on-1 or even 2-on-1 matches. Has a good shot and hockey sense, but needs more seasoning in the AHL to either muscle up or learn to use his stick better to compensate for the size disadvantage.

Soucy/Myers: lol not even worth talking about anymore

Silovs: Just fine. The issue is the Canucks are going to need great if they want to get through this next stretch at .500. Lankinen has come down to earth a bit after a solid start, and the Canucks are a bottom 10 team right now with their ES 5 on 5 save percentage (semi-deflated from some blowouts). Going to need better to make sure the season doesn't spiral out of control like it did in 2022-2023.

I don't know which thread you've been reading, but almost every other post in the PGTs (including this one) has talked about how shitty the d-core looks outside of Hughes/Hronek. Even with Miller out, the talk amount of posts talking about the two are equal, and in every PGT outside of this it's just been a shit on Soucy/Myers fest.

I'm really at a loss why Soucy and Myers seem to have a never-ending leash and never get a healthy scratch to send a message. Even if the coaches refuse to admit there's a problem, the analytics and video guys should have been alerting everyone on staff that the pairing is costing games

Well amongst all the d-men who played tonight, Soucy was the low minute man. But sooner or later you have to throw him over the boards.

But I'm with you. Why keep throwing him out there with Myers?

I truly think we need to make a trade here sooner than later, especially with all the depth problems and injuries as well
Hoglander for Zadorov.... Heck throw in Myers as well.

But I agree, this is why I didn't want Myers resigned and tbh I would of traded Hronek, that's $10.25M to get two other D to balance out the lines, instead of just having 1D pair.

Honestly, really good effort considering the circumstances. I can't be mad.

I was at the game and I always forget how much crap Garland takes on a shift-to-shift basis until I see it live again. He could get shot live on ice and wouldn't get a call.

Looks totally insoucyant out there.

HOW LONG have you waited for this? One of the greatest posts of VanHF.

Also, bomb-cyclone people. 1) It's not hurricane force winds; the lowest strength hurricane, Cat 1, starts at 119km/h sustained winds. I've taken a look at the charts and the highest wind *gust* is 136km at the moment. It's not hurricane. It's a strong, strong storm. 2) The bomb in bomb cyclone originates from bombogenesis which is a meteorological term when the pressure in the eye of the low drops 24 millibars in 24 hours. IE, it strengthens rapidly.

Back to injured misery with you all, now.

Tonight’s Game
  • Played really hard tonight
  • Disappointed in the Islander game but wasn’t disappointed in the Nashville game and isn’t in this game
  • Played hard but couldn’t make the key play
  • Line changes were better
Off-Ice Stuff
  • Things you need to overcome; adversity
  • Went through stuff last season too
  • Going to get some bodies back
  • Guys played hard tonight
  • This adversity will galvanize the club
  • Some players coming back in a week or two weeks; some All-Star players
  • In the meantime, some players are getting used to these pressure situations; valuable experience
Sherwood
  • Passionate guy; need players like him
  • Plays like it’s a privilege to play in the NHL
  • Sherwood told Tocchet in the summer that he was going to practice shooting pucks at a garage because he wanted to improve his offence
  • Calls his play contagious
Garland
  • Wife is going to give birth soon
  • Was up at 3am and then 7am; hasn’t had any sleep and was the team’s best player
  • You love the kid

pretty good effort tonite in a game i don't think anyone expected much from

pettersson looked great but it's tragic watching him try to make things happen with debrusk and sherwood on his wings. it's far from the team's biggest need but if they want to really contend for a cup they need to find a running mate for him. other than maybe boeser there's not one winger on the team talented enough to play with him

bains looks pretty good when he isn't lined up on the top line and expected to keep up with miller and boeser. i can see him being a pretty decent depth player in the pdg mold

raty on the other hand i just don't see what people like about his game. he tries hard but he's always out of position because his mobility is awful. i have mega bias towards good skaters (especially in the bottom six) so i could be wrong but i just don't see him sticking

something has got to give with the defense. i would rather not see any of juulsen, brannstrom, soucy or myers again but that's obviously not realistic. gotta get at least two of them out of the lineup though if this team wants to compete

Realistically Hronek is more of a #3.
On maybe a really really deep team that would be fair a assessment, but I still think he can be a 1D, but I don't think we needed to sign him to that much, and could of used that money and Myers money to spread out the signings better for more depth on D.

Both Myers and Hog extensions seem to be aging VERY poorly right now.

I still have faith in Mr. Clean and Moleman, for now. Despite their off season moves coming off as a very mixed bag.

Catch my drift here but he's a #2.5. He can be a #2 for a good stretch of games but he's not reliable for it. He'll find a groove at some point this year and lose it.

What you'd like to do is find another guy like that and split the load, I liked the Hampus Lindholm target for that but then you've got age curve concerns to worry about.

Hey, guys? You know who would look really good right now?

I think they're trying but the reported prices are supposedly very high. I wouldn't be surprised if Pittsburgh was demanding our 1st and Hoglander knowing full well that's way too steep a price. But why not play hardball when they can always settle in a few months if no one bites?

To be fair, some of Myers and Soucy's regression has to be worn by management here. They aren't consistent top four players but can handle it in short bursts. Which worked when we could lean on Cole and Zadorov if they were having a stronger game.

Instead, we switched back to a tradition top pair, middle pair, bottom pair... except Soucy and Myers are more bottom pair unless they're in a rotation. It was a bad gamble and likely going to cost us more assets to fix.

The retool approach again, I think is starting to catch up unfortunately. Did the Canucks overachieve a little bit last year quite possibly, no one expected them to do what they did last year, and there were times last year where they were being outshot badly and out played and didn't deserve to win.

The last 10 out of 12 games this year they've been scored on first, very similar to when Travis Green was here. I believe that stat was 12 out of the first 14 games they were scored on first in 1 of the seasons under Green, and playing catch up a lot. Even this year as Tocchet has mentioned quite a bit, they just don't seem ready in the 1st period a lot, and that's very similar to when Bruce was here, Bruce was addressing this is issue almost every game it seemed and they had to play catch up a lot. I still see similar problems from the past and this retool approach I was always against, especially how bad it went under Benning.

Not horrible overpayment, but yeah you get it. In a vacuum the deal is fine - in our situation it's not ,because our mistake tolerance with this year was hit really once the OEL trade was processed with the NHL which was like nearly a full year before our current manager was hired. What could we have used that extra $2mill on I wonder?

Lekk has got a look, that's one player under a mill, could've rolled the dice on him not signed Debrusk, suddenly we have more tolerancy to re-sign Zadorov and have money left over, or maybe Lindholm is still a Canuck and Miller's absence doesn't hurt as bad. Anything is possible with unspent money, that's opportunity cost. A basic business principle.

Suddenly, maybe the Benning skeptics don't seem so crazy now I hope? Otherwise I have no hope in humanity. And maybe, whatever Benning supporters are left reading this realize you don't know as much about business as you thought???

No shame in it. I don't even know that much - but I do know how much I don't know. Just 2 cents for ya.

Like I'm not some great mind - I did alright in business school but I dropped out. The concept of opportunity cost akin to hockey is like having your stick on the ice going to the net - if you aren't thinking about it, you're a schmuck.

Not saying this to you Chuck, this is a post open to the entire forum to discuss and sink their teeth into and call me conceited.
