The last PP before they struggled with the zone entry (again) was the best we've seen all season. Instead of just Quinn and Miller tossing it back and forth like they're in the backyard with a baseball, they:

  1. EP one-timer
  2. EP one-timer
  3. Lekk high slot Boeser shot (pass didn't get through)
  4. Garland in Miller's RW spot
  5. Low-high play to Miller for bumper shot
  6. Finished off with Quinn walking the line for a point shot

THen they couldn't get back into the zone but that's what the PP should look like, I don't know how they got into such a predictable and stupid funk.

There was also a play in there where JT Miller did a drop pass to Quinn Hughes instead of the reverse and it facilitated an easy zone entry.

Garbage performance

Overplaying Lankinen and it is showing

Horrible D coverage

Zero effort

Way to rob the fans in attendance of their hard earned cash Canucks

But hey, Tocchet is a great coach right?

Again, this team has not played the system except in fits and starts this season. Individual lines do ok but the team as a whole is not doing what Tocchet wants them to do.

It's even more important that they become more disciplined even if it means lower event hockey, because the defence is weaker. They need all the forward help they can get.

How do you trade more 1st rounders, draft picks and prospects to improve this roster?

I don't think you do.

This roster is much weaker than last year's roster, especially on defense. The loss of Cole and Zadorov are starting to hurt. While Myers and Soucy are sucking wind. The defense is much worse and is becoming a major liability on this roster.

As for the game other than the Lekkerimaki 1st career goal, that game was about as bad as it gets.

Awful effort, shitty defense. Need to get better.

Pettersson, Hronek and Joshua are making a combined $9 million more than they were last season. There's your two defencemen.

I noticed that as well. I don’t have much hope for that being a thing tough but I’d love to see it implemented

it's kind of too late to take a "retooling" year

hughes has two more years after this one, miller is turning 32 and myers is turning 35. beyond lekkerimaki and willander there's not much hope for any impact players coming out of the system. a few 2025 draft picks aren't going to move the needle until it's way too late

you kind of need to swing for the fences all three years of hughes contract to have a reasonable shot at a cup

Yeah Quinn handing off to like anyone else has been head scratching. Again, hockey is about being unpredictable. He should be getting the drop pass like 50% of the time.

The thing about Hughes carrying the puck over the blueline is that opposing players actually give him more time and space than less talented players because they're scared of charging at him and then looking stupid and getting caught behind the play.

Yep, see that with McDavid on literally every zone entry he attempts.

Might take a real PP coach like Newell Brown or Nolan Baumgartner to see this though :sarcasm:

Wow!.....Tocchet calls out his team and apologizes to the fans.....says his team played 'light' and turned away from checks.

It's an issue with this team.....they're 'small'. And sometimes they play 'small'. Allvin won't tolerate this for very long.

The amount of puck watching, bad (and sometimes complete lack of) body position, and soft attempts at exits this season in the defensive zone is baffling.

These were things we rarely saw last season which made us one of the better defensive teams in the league. Even in the games we've won so far we've had a lot of poor stretches and habits, but usually they just are swept aside anytime you pick up the 2 points.

I don't know what you do other than threaten loss of ice-time/benchings/scratchings. But like pretty much all coaches, I don't see Tocchet doing that to any of his veterans. With Soucy - Myers in particular there is real concern that last year was just a blip for them in a good way and this is their normal, which would make sense based on the majority of their careers.

The trend of garbage efforts on home ice are concerning.

Great for Lekkerimaki to score - would have been nice to see that fire up the team rather than have them all enter a coma.

The rest of the night was no good, very bad and awful.

Hope everyone takes a long look in the mirror and comes out with their asses on fire next game…and the next game…and string a few consistent efforts together.

I will say this about Tocchet - it's nice to hear a coach actually tell it how it is and call his team out for playing like shit, than taking the backseat "we had a lot of chances, that's a good team over there" approach.

Glad that Tocchet is taking accountability, also apologizing for that effort tonight.
He knows it and he made sure the team knows it, that's unacceptable.

I know they think Lekkerimaki will work in the bumper position on the PP, because of his shot. But he looks lost to me.

They need to move him to the half-wall like they did in Abbotsford. He doesn't need much an angle to zip the puck past the goaltender, and he's more effective on the one-timer from that position.
