With Brannstrom clearly our new #1 Dman, is it time to consider trading Quinn to improve our forward depth?
Tocchet likes Lek solely because Lek is already starting to bald.

Yeah, he wasn't really "reclamation" material. Neither was Naslund, really, when you consider his 19 goals and 33 assists in 66 games when Pittsburgh traded him.
I recall that Montreal dealt Lumme after an infraction of some sort—out after curfew, or something like that.

Brannstrom is clearly worth more.
Send him back to Ottawa for Tkachuk and Sanderson.
I don't really count him as being in the type of situation I'm talking about, though. The Canucks went out and got a promising young defenseman with a reasonably high draft pick – that was more a bet that turned out than a throw-in or salary dump. I mean, a guy like Gélinas was picked up on waivers.
Yeah I know Näslund is borderline for this category, but he always just seemed like whatever the Penguins were giving up in an exchange of problems. I don't remember people being especially psyched about him (I was stoked for both him and Jesse Bélanger).

Miller is our modern day Naslund. They were solid, then turned elite after being acquired.

Workman- like job overall. Pretty boring for the most part but a win is a win.
Good
Lankanin - coverage down low around his net continues to be high level. Flames got too many shots from the slot and Lankanin had to be good. Wish we had signed him long term.
Pettersson - still he lacks some of the breakaway speed he showed earlier but beginning to get lot more done. Hopefully heads getting into the right place.
Hughes - don't know where the team would be without him. Gets any sort of rest and he becomes dominant.
Sherwood - makes himself a factor near every shift. Heart and soul type player
Brannstrom - good to see him score and another effective game. Giving himself space to make plays with his skating and consistently good outlet passes in the flow of the play. Having a good season.
Others
Miller - some good, some not good. Bit of an adventure all round as he faciliates b/w making excellent passes and just horrible passes.
Myers - Soucy - some tough minutes but duo is having too many giveaways.
Lekkeramaki - stayed in the play maybe better than expected. Thought he could have shot the puck more.
Raty - to me, his skating doesn't look ready. Don't think Tocchet has much trust in this player. Getting his feet wet which might help the team down the road.
Desharnais - not saying much but showing he's preferable to Juulsen
Hoglander - given playing time seems in the doghouse - hope fading for this player.
Important to pick up the win after the disaster against Edmonton last game. Hopefully get some of the injured back soon.

Eventually the better team took over but Canucks have to figure out the sloppy starts. Just not sharp and at times lazy in the 1st period. Lots of puck watching and soft clear attempts in the defensive zone.
Will echo what everyone else had to say about Lekk: it was obvious pretty quickly that he has a high IQ and a mature game. Did not look out of place whatsoever. He was even out there defending the lead when Calgary pulled their goalie. I know it was a 2-goal lead but you still don't expect to see that. Not sure if it's there's a spot for him once Boeser and Joshua are back but this was a very encouraging game 1.
Miller with one of his better games in a while, setup a bunch of good chances. And of course Pettersson with his best of the season as his game continues to ramp up. If both these guys are going at the same time, it's a very tough 1-2 punch for other teams to defend.

Great to see Petey continuing to gather momentum. Absolutely massive for us that he is finding his game. Keep it up.

Kyle Wellwood, picked up on waivers, then passed through waivers to Manitoba, then called up soon after when injuries hit.
A man possessed. Like Brannstrom.

Naslund didn't really break out until 98/99, when we were the drizzling shits at the time. He followed that up with a good season in 99/00 and then really broke out the next season.
It took Naslund quite a while to get going.

Hoglander I felt had a much better game than Lekkerimaki. I get that it's easy to fall in love with the shiny new toy but Lekkerimaki had a OK game.
Lekkerimaki looked like he didn't want to make any mistakes. He'd constantly be the first one to change. Only 1 shot attempt for him tonight and a few giveaways. I've seen him play better.

If this was last year, the Canucks would've ran away with this one early in the second. Thought the team carried the flow of play for the most part, and the one goal against was against the grain. Some notes:
Petterson - best game I've seen him play this year. I wrote about speed bursts and a possible injury earlier, but I think his play has shown so far it was mainly mental. He's playing way more shifts with Hughes than earlier in the season, which has improved his confidence immensely and has him skating with more pace as he knows he's going to get the puck on his stick when open.
Garland - great penalty killing, weaker game at ES. While he carried Petey hard when he was struggling, thought Petey carried him at ES today. Same deal with Debrusk, except Debrusk was a bit more clueless defensively.
Hughes - world class, it's just ridiculous at this point. Think Hronek still gets undervalued around here, as he really enables Hughes in the offensive zone. Every other dman is way too slow in their decision making to keep up with him.
Lankinen - solid bounceback game. I think the Canucks defensive game gets underrated around here though, everytime he makes a save on a high danger shot people freak out about the Canucks giving up too many chances. Unlike our backups last year, the Canucks don't need to be in full lockdown mode at the cost of offense as he's been great.
Lekk - You see the skill and good decision making (albeit a half second behind at titmes), but he's still rough around the edges. He's in the right spot for the most part, but his stick and body work need to get better as he couldn't take the puck away on the forecheck or in the dzone today.
Third line - another solid performance. Still blows my mind they make collectively less than 6 million after being free agents this past year.
Was nice seeing Brannstrom get a goal. He's been found money, and most importantly has kept Juulsen out of the lineup.

Well after tonight the Canucks are tied for 8th in the league. Whereas is they had lost tonight, they would be in a 3 way tie for 11th. Early in the season, a 2 game winning steak vs a 2 game losing streak can make a massive difference on where you are in the standings.
We should be reasonably happy with how we are doing. Not ecstatic, but not suicidal either.
And not every Canucks will be lights out, nor will most of them be cannon fodder at this point.
Happy with tonights game. They were clearly the better team on all levels. Offense, defence and tending. If anything this game should have been 5 - 1.
On to Thursday.
Oh, let's face it, we should win all 3. Just like I said we should handle Edm easily. (at the time I thought McD was not going to be playing).
