Start of season..

“We have the best forward depth in the NHL!”

“Podz couldn’t even crack our lineup last season and he’s in the Oilers lineup, speaks volumes to our superior depth”

“No more guys like Mikheyev & Lafferty in our top 6”

“We’ll be amongst the highest scoring teams in the NHL”

What happened..

AHLer Bains on first line
AHLer Raty as 3C
Sprong scrated
Desharnais scratched for ECHLer
Tocchet benching players, calling out team
Panic mode setting in

I'm convinced that the time to win is when your elite players are cost controlled. As soon as you have to pay someone more than $9-10 million per season, it almost makes more sense to trade them for a haul and see if you can get more young productive assets.

Even at PPG, Pettersson's contract limits us from adding another top 4 defenceman and the team is suffering because of it.

Suter-Miller-Boeser (proven, effective)
DeBrusk-EP-Hoglander (big upgrade with DeBrusk replacing Mikheyev)
Heinen/Joshua-Blueger-Garland (best 3rd line in hockey)
Sprong-Raty-Sherwood (4th line replaces Di Giuseppe-Aman-Lafferty)

Keep the top 3 lines as close to what they were last season, already showcased proven chemistry.

Also think Aman (24) is slightly better than Raty (21) at the moment (Raty has more potential). Let Raty develop in the AHL and bring him up next season but have the more experienced player as the 4C this season.

This was always the concern/risk. They were going to have to hit home runs in the FA and trade market basically every year to make it work, and lose guys like Cole, Zadorov and Lindholm in the process due to the cap situation. If they fail, the team would take a major step back season-on-season. They obviously did it last year. Too early to say how this year's turnover will eventually work out.

Play Sprong in Joshua’s spot until he returns. Keep the top 3 lines as close to what they were last season, already have proven chemistry.
A higher shooting % sure does wonders for the doomer fans.

They win this one with Lankinen and big D Desharnais
And what about Demko and Joshua. Tampa doesn't win that game w/o Vasey. But hey let's all doom. The free agents suck , the trades sucked blah blah

If Pettersson played like a $10 million dollar player we’d have won the Cup last season. We took the Oilers to game 7 with our 3rd string goalie and may have won if Boeser wasn’t out with blood clots, not to mention the Soucy suspension. Speaking of the Oilers, McDavid & Draisaitl literally carried that Oilers team to game 7 of the finals (Tkachuck & Barkov played excellent for the panthers). Pay Star players what they deserve as they’re game breakers but just make sure they’re Superstar players that make a huge impact on the team.

Even that strategy of locking your guys coming out of elc doesn't guaranteed success. Ottawa has been doing that with Chabot, Tkachuck, Norris, Stutzle, Sanderson and have done nothing. Ditto for Buffalo.

A lot has to come together at the right time. ELC contributions over their $925K base salary, barring a top draft pick, you are typically going to get 1 maybe 2 good years from them (even factoring any bonuses they may achieve). For FA, the likes of a Bleuger, Joshua, Suter, etc. when they sign will be like 2 years. So, they turn over quickly.

And how well you have done developing your talent base. Too many misses and you have little margin for error on the assets you have remaining.

Sprong is exactly as advertised. There's a reason he can't get multi year contracts. Tocchet will staple him to the pine if he doesn't figure out how to play in his own end. But I think he is what he is at this point.
