There are many great choices this year and it'll come down to "how they prefer their team to be built". Imo Nill won over Zito because voters prefer teams that don't empty the cupboard or leave themselves in a bit of a pickle.I'm sorry, but how is not Chris MacFarland? Literally rebuilt the Avs goaltending mid season, which had near bottom of the league stats, to some of the best in the league. On top of that, brought in a top 6 C, a top 4 D and a high end middle 6 C. Again, all of this done throughout the season
The Captials GM has to be up there, no? It was a great turn around for their team this season. Chevy is another candidate.
If the Avalanche are out in the 1st round none of those changes mattered anyway. They were 3rd in the Central when the first trade was made and they still ended up 3rd in the Central when the season ended. If Avs go on a deep run, now then you have a candidate.I'm sorry, but how is not Chris MacFarland? For sure. The roster and results are night and day better than last season, and the best part is that the top defenseman of post-Carlson era, a starting goalie and a high-potential 2C all were acquired nearly for free. Factor in the revamp of depth players and even Beauvillier at the deadline, who seems like a great fit, and I think we have a frontrunner. The Captials GM has to be up there, no? if macfarland had addressed the goaltending in the offseason, he'd have a stronger case. waiting until it predictably imploded before making a move at a higher midseason cost isn't a good spot to put yourself in, even if he dug out eventually.I'm sorry, but how is not Chris MacFarland? Im not even fighting for McFarland, but the Blues were headed towards a dumpster fire before they did their miracle crap again. Easily couldve gone the other way and theyve only recently (4 Nations basically) played well. Obviously perfect timing, but to credit the GM, meh. He did nothing a tthe deadline and then they went on a magical 12 game run.Avs key acquisitions (not including support pieces):
Nelson (cost him Ritchie)
Blackwood
Necas (cost him Rantanen)
For the Blues, they didn't really lose anything significant...so the net asset management is larger for the Blues imo.

For me, it's easily Washington.
He brought in Pierre-Luc Dubois, Jeff Chykrun and Logan Thompson. All three of those acquisitions have over-delivered on expectations and are an enormous part of the Capitals success this season.
He also made great depth acquisitions too, bringing in Matt Roy, Andrew Mangiapane and Lars Eller.
That's six everyday players he added to the roster for this season and all of them have been successful adds.

The caveat to this is the GM until July 8th was Brian MacLellan who made most of these moves, then he moved into a President of Hockey Ops role and promoted Chris Patrick to GM. I'm not sure if MacLellan is still eligible or not based on that, otherwise yes I'd give to either him or Doug Armstrong. Armstrong pulled some rabbits out of his hat this year and I always appreciate creativity and having balls to take a big risk which he did with the offer sheets, definitely masterful work.I don't see how it's not the Capitals GM. All of their key acquisitions are bearing fruit and nobody expected them to be where they're at now.
