They would have to get very lucky in the lottery and work some miracles to dump salary at virtually no cumulative cost.
Team was absolutely boned by the refs in OT - if the team was actually in a playoff race that series events would have been beyond infuriating. Overall, you had to like the process tonight. Played very well for a half-game, then had a total implosion to fall behind 4-1, then did all the right things to outplay a good team the rest of the way and come back from 3 goals down.
- best thing about the game was the play of Podkolzin. Looked dynamic and motivated and played his best game at either the NHL or AHL level since his nice run at the end of last season. If Tocchet can get this sort of performance out of him consistently that will be a huge win. His hands, though ... ugh.
- second best thing was Luke Schenn. Absolute monster game, one of the best by any defender on this team in any game this year. Hopefully scouts were watching because that was outstanding. He has to be traded, but it might make more sense to take a slightly smaller return from a team where he won't sign for next year over one where he likely will (Calgary) so we can try and bring him back.
- Beauvillier was ... meh. Had a couple good moments, especially the pass to spring Pettersson on the breakaway but also looked small and easily eliminated from the play. Dumb shot attempt in OT.
- Dakota Joshua has probably been the most improved player under Tocchet, and had another strong game tonight. Lazar also had one of his first effective games this season.
- Brock Boeser is just a steaming turd. So slow, so ineffective, and Tocchet has pretty quickly dropped him down the lineup. Needs to be traded ASAP for anything we can get, because he's liable to go on a 2 points in 15 games kind of run to the deadline getting this sort of icetime.
- Andrei Kuzmenko is really good. Just keeps scoring.
- Tyler Myers was just in panic mode with the puck on his stick in his own zone all night. So many turnovers, so many failed clears. Could not keep up with the speed of the Devils or the speed of this game.
- Ethan Bear, likewise, really struggled with the pace of this game and had one of his poorer outings this season.
- Quinn Hughes, by and large, had a very good game. But his effort level on the 1-1 goal is what's separating him from the top tier of NHL defenders. Just stopped skating and assumed Bear would cut Jack Hughes off and did nothing to back up his partner. Biggest challenge for Tocchet will be to instill better habits in key players in situations like this.
- Phil Di Giuseppe is more of an NHL player than Dries and just a superior two-way player. Beautiful goal tonight.
- we lose this game with Spencer Martin in net.

Update: Pretty hard to distinguish between Dries & Boeser these days.
Podkolzin looks much better, though.

I wouldn't trade OEL for Gudbranson, let alone Myers, let alone retaining on Myers, unless we were going to instantly buy him out.
There are not many players still in this league I dislike more or would be more upset to see put on a Canucks jersey.

Get 3 players with less than 3 goals each scoring this late in the season. That has normally got to be a win, no?

Saw tonight what a great player Jack Hughes is. Just dominant. Really outplayed Pettersson in this game. Outside of Hughes and some shaky reffing, Canucks likely the better team.
Would say, under Tocchet, play of the grinders has improved. See how long that lasts but seemingly, by playing everyone more evenly, he's getting more out some players.
Obvious key to the game was the 5 on 3 and if the Canucks can ever clean up the PK situation, their record will improve. Has been the main problem with the team this year by a fair margin (of course along with the defense)
Good
Kumenko - starting to take on players more one on one. Seeing more aspects to his game.
Lazar -looks a lot more willing to go the body. Maybe fearful Tocchet will beat him up if he doesn't. Made himself a factor in this game which has been a rarity this year
Joshua - much more determined and focused effort. Not letting himself drift out of the play as he has done too much this season. Putting together a good string of games
Not good
Myers - Can't get into any sort of groove for any length of time. Chasing the play and getting drawn out of position. Always seemed in recovery mode as he scrambled back into the play. Trying to do too much and getting less done. A main culprit during the New Jersey frenzy in the second. Puck movement in this game was jittery and overly forced.
OEL - has to make some attempt to assert himself fully into the play. Reactive b/c he is not mentally focused. Very ordinary player at best, who is killing you cap wise.
Others
Beauvillier - pretty much as advertised. Quick player who sees the ice decently but may lack finish. Made a couple of heady play but mostly ordinary in the run of things. Early to tell but probably lacks elite stick handling skill. Had some problems with defensive coverage in this game. Players like him can get on a roll but also can go very quiet for long periods
Stillman - best game by a good bit. Not good on the 4th regular game goal where he failed to keep his check from cutting to the net but showed a good turn of speed on Lazar's goal. Also was quicker and less error prone in getting the puck out of his zone. Plays like this and he will stay in the line up.
Schenn - some good , some bad. Had trouble and got pushed back by the Devils's speed but made them pay when they did get to the net. Hopefully getting some points builds his trade value. Team like Jersey could use him.
Hughes - looked good at times but didn't result in much. Second best Hughes on the ice for sure. Got beat to the post a couple of times on Devil rushes.
Podkolzin - skated well and created a good forecheck. LIke Lazar, he went to the body and this was helpful in slowing down New Jersey.
Rather the Canucks get nothing but, at least, it was only 1. Have to hope the rest of the road trip is less productive. Didn't the team missed Horvat in this game.
