Post-Game Talk: GM 48 | Canucks def. Capitals | 2-1 (Hughes x2) | Follow your Captain.

Good effort but also lucky the Capitals were off execution wise. Can't imagine Ovechkin has had 3 clean looks off that faceoff play and not scored too often in his career. Gotta wonder how the game would have went if Eller had scored that early empty net given how low morale seems to be. Still, the team hasn't had much luck of late so you take it.

Pettersson, outside of one puck battle that he won in the 2nd period, was awful and pretty much a momentum killer on the PP. People will point to him having an AHLer on his wing but he's played with pretty much every winger on the team now, it's not an excuse anymore. His first couple steps are almost as slow as Boeser's. Too many games where he looks like a rookie that is physically unready for the NHL except he's 26 and has played over 400 NHL games.

Nice to see Hoglander have a strong game after the questionable scratching. Moved his feet and made things happen, probably the best Canuck forward.

Once again, what more can you say about Hughes. He is literally everything to this team. Was skating incredibly well in transition.

Liked what I saw from EP2, much better skating than I would have thought. Didn't play much but was steady and did not look nervous or comfortable. Would like to see him in more games.

Are you new to hockey? This happens to pretty much every team and has happened to the Canucks over the years under all rosters and coaches.

Ever heard of "score effects"? There's a reason this term exists.

If the roster was better they'd be better able to handle opposing surges but that isn't the case. He's not telling them to dump and change for the entire 3rd period, the players just get overwhelmed and it happens.

No, they do this regardless. They are 24th in CF% when up by 1 goal and 22nd when Leading in general.

Unless you're saying they're "overwhelmed" any time they lead?

And what's their CF% ranking in all situations? Probably a few spots higher at best, which is negligible.

16th.

Anecdotally, just watching this team and other teams in the neutral zone is night and day.

I believe they have the lowest events league wide for this reason.

Washington looked pretty flat given expectations. Still Canucks with a good effort. Sort of how they have to play. Hope Hughes can produce enough offense, have Lankanin covering up for mistakes and pray the rest can do enough to keep the the play at least close to even.

Good

Hughes - first goal was so skilled. Guy is on a whole different level.

Lankanin - gives the team a chance. We would have no chance at the playoffs without him. Season, long ago, would be have been toast. Has to get the majority of games. Demko needs to sort himself out.

Heinen - Much more in the play and okay with Miller and Boeser. At this point, just leave him there. Got double shifted at times in this game.

Hronek - best game in a while. Like Hughes playing big minutes and you wonder how long that is sustainable. But Hronek looked quicker and had betteer range in this game. Kept good positioning around the net against given the size of the Capitals.

Others

DeBrusk - what is he doing at the minute??? Gone extremely quiet. Zero goals, zero assists and mostly a no show the last few weeks.

EP2 - did not look out of place. Didn't play a lot but, like in Abby, he shows he has the skating and positioning to be a very promising player. Might as well keep in the lineup as he is probably already better than the likes of Juulsen. If team starts to completely fall off might as well give Kudryavstev a look as well.

Sasson - had a good game. Maybe have to live with the poor games and just stick with him to see if can become more consistent.

Karlsson - I think his best game with the Vancouver team. To me, he has never look like he could skate well enough to stay in the play. Tonite he did. Looks far from being a real contributor, but he has taken a step this season in term of skating. Looks heavier in the play.

Forbert - looking better than the write off he appeared to be for much of the season. I'd say he is playing adequately which was beyond expectations for this player. Soucy - Forbert were better in this game.

Miller - unlucky not to score, but that's the way it's being going this season. Effort was there. Still taking bad penalties however.

Road trip leading up to the break will likely be a key factor in determining where the team is headed.
Have to build off this win.

Source? Naturalstattrick shows them 24th when leading by 1, 22nd when leading by any amount, and 20th all scores.

I was looking at the Tied state. (naturalstattrick)

They are also the best team at HDCAs (97) and are told to protect the house as a primary strategy.

There's a lot more to suggest they defend as a primary concept. I'm not sure it can really be argued.

Yes but he’s definitely making it worse. There is no offensive plays after we gain the zone. It’s just dump, chase and point shot. I think the team is straight up not allowed to make an east west pass, not even to the slot.

That I disagree with philosophically, if that is the case. Let the players have the offensive side at least.

Take a listen to Tocchet's post game from tonight. He kept going on about how frustrated he is that the players are deferring to the blueline instead of taking the puck to the interior of the ice and making a higher percentage play. Mentioned they're going to change up how they practice and start doing half an hour of purely getting to the middle of the ice.

My headache got the better of me and ended up passing out for most of the 2nd and 3rd period. Saw parts of the 2nd and the final 10 minutes. How did D-Petey look?
I liked his game honestly. I hope he gets a few more this season and then they let him cook a bit more in Abby, just so he can get the big minutes. Against the top team in the league he only gave up one bad giveaway, otherwise did good in the sheltered minutes he got. He drove one play straight up the ice, was refreshing honestly.

Practise is paying off then since it does take them half an hour to get the puck to the middle of the ice

Sure, like I said when we were discussing in the Tocchet thread, they've decided that they want low-event hockey in all zones but again to me that isn't the same as turtling.

When you only have 2 play-driving forwards and they are both playing like shit and acting like petulant children at the same time, it's kind of tough to trade chances and hope you match the firepower of literally any other team in the league except maybe the likes of Chicago and San Jose.

(now you can argue Tocchet should be able to get more out of those guys and he should share some blame of letting their situation get out of control but that's kind of besides the point and also lets the man-babies off the hook a little too easily, IMO)

I honestly don’t know how a coach doesn’t know why the players are not doing what he thinks they should do.
