Teams deal with injuries all the time

Vancouver Canucks, making excuses for losing for over 50 years … and counting

They do. Which is why Colorado is only now getting into the playoff hunt yet started the season on a backwards slide. It's almost like injuries to key players will hurt you.

We're missing both our top pairing defensemen, one of whom is arguably the best defensemen in the league, and our star center. But sure, we'll just win anyway. It's not like any of those players really matter.

I'm on tank and retool now. Bounce back next season with a restocked prospect pool and rebuilt D.
Tanking would only work with this team if we traded those picks for players to help next year. You dont want to be in the situation we are in this year with a few prospects almost but not quite there in Hughes contract year

We blew a 3 goal lead with under 5 minutes to go last game against a divisional rival that profiles as a bottom 10 team, and now we lost to another divisional rival that profiles as a bottom 10 team, and are officially on the outside looking in regarding the playoff picture. Those players matter, but if this team is a Cup contender (Which it clearly isn't) you win games like the last one, and you especially come out with a much better effort in games like tonight after what happened last game.

It's not that simple. Yes, we need a better effort, but we also have to accept the limitations of the players we're not forced to play in roles they simply aren't capable of. Look at how we lost to Seattle. 4-2 game where we clearly held play until Juulsen makes a boneheaded pizza pass to the middle of nowhere, Soucy tries (and fails) to push it out with a weak tap and bam, it's 4-3. Skipping ahead, we have Myers, someone who never plays OT, forced to step on and misplays his pass to Miller.

Both these scenarios don't happen if we have Hughes or Hronek. Hell, they're unlikely if we had a decent #3

This would be the smart thing to do in a seller's market. Flip Lankinen for a late first, that's found money. Use that as a trade chip to land a top 4 defenceman.

Nobody's giving up a 1st for Linkinen. He's had a terrific season, but goalies just don't have that value unless they're proven. Even then, they often still don't.

Regardless, every team currently in the playoffs have a goalie. If they're spending a 1st, it'll be on forward or defense help.

Team is bad and boring, the worst possible combination. Aqua is going to be putting pressure on management soon, as this sad excuse for a defensive core just can’t continue.
And still weak. Never have been able to shake their weak moniker. They have Sherwood and big D and Joshua but are still Charmin soft

Honestly I don't understand what the actual expectations are for the team from a few of these posters. It's like hey! We've had a shitty losing franchise for the better part of it's existence, so on the heels of an 8 year shit show, the team has to be at the top of the league or else fire everyone?

I get the frustration, but I think a bit of common sense need be applied.

I wasn't keen on this idea of a fast turn around and that was proven wrong last year when so much went right. Now, we're seeing how difficult it is to maneuver when you have almost zero room for error. They've absolutely killed it with certain players and have almost killed their season with others ha ha.

They hitched their wagon to Pettersson and Miller and both of those guys have crapped all over themselves. Every team in the league is going to struggle to win with your top two center's not playing well and thankfully Lankinen has for the most part hidden Demko falling apart.

Finally you've got all these high end caliber players and they're all injured or refusing to play up to the standard they led everyone to believe they were capable of. I'm so impressed with how many unique ways this franchise has of screwing over it's long suffering fans.

Happy New Year to you all!

Ownership is now gonna raise their shit at management with this defense core. It’s bleeding and it’s pouring out.

Defense core isn’t good enough, Hughes and hronek out is a double whammy.

Pretty simple to analyze: No Hughes ... No offense. Can blame the defense ( and they weren't good) but 1 goal ain't going to do it most of the time.

Good

Lankanin - kept score down. Made some very good saves and had little chance on the goals.

Boeser - looked most likely to do something and only one that did.

Myers - logged a ton of time and really the only defenseman holding the back end somewhat together. Maybe not great but in comparison to others was decent and had to absolutely carry pairings at times.

Bad

Desharnais - fell apart in the third. Just can't play his blueline and backed totally in all game (especially on winning goal)

Juulsen - ugh - another who can't hold the blue line. Can really only skate at near NHL level going forwards

Forbert - yikes - clunkiest skater maybe in the League. (Desharnais might give him a run). Half hearted effort in his scrape with Lomberg.

Hoglander - Just awful. Any chance he gets on net seems to put the puck way high and way wide. Beat the puck to death any time it came his way.

Joshua - Hopefully it his bad off season that is leading to his dismal year. If this is what he is going forward, we've got another bad contract.

If things continue as they are (and there is little reason to think they won't), Canuck management needs to take a hard look at the situation and establish a revised direction moving ahead. Injuries are killing off any chance this year and they have some major contract issues looming. Taking a step back to allow some steps forward in the future, needs to be considered.
