Yup, people can blame Silovs but you're kidding yourself if you think this bottom 4 isn't garbage

Unfortunately, both statements can and are accurate. Our bottom four is woefully inconsistent at best and Silovs simply isn't NHL ready.

At this point, unless Demko is a very long time off I think Tocchet just has to accept Lankinen plays pretty much every game barring the occasional night off. He can have a break when Demko gets back.

A few nuggets from this night. Hughes continues to be all-world. Simply wouldn't bet against him winning back-to-back Norris Trophies. He looks even better than he did last year, if that's even possible.

And Raty lights the lamp and plays a strong two-way game. And I really hope they give Sasson more minutes, and maybe even move him to the middle. One of the few forwards with enough speed to back up the defensemen. But it's harder to do, playing on the wing.

This is like that 2007-2008 season where nothing was going our way early on and it just snowballed into a shit storm. Just a complete write off of a season.

or could be like the 1993-94 season where nothing was going our way all year and then there was a miracle deadline trade to plug the lineup’s massive holes on D and we squeaked into the playoffs, caught fire in game five and

To be fair, there's not many good goalies in the league this year.

There's Helle who is the only true elite in his own tier... then you have guys like Vasi, Daccord, Stolarz, Gustavsson and Oettinger. The rest are mediocre

Yeah, I get that.

Silovs looked a little better in the playoffs and is looking very rough. You'd think that having the offseason and more time with Ian Clark and the rest of the Canucks coaching staff would've seen him at least stay at the same level or so, no?

He really need to play a ton of games in the A and show that he can put up above average svp. He’s just not ready to be a backup.

Tonight’s Game
  • Gifted Penguins goals in the 1st period
  • Liked the fight to come back
Silovs
  • Is struggling
  • Needs to be bigger in the net and battle
  • The goal mouth stuff has been going in all year
  • When you don’t have confidence, you sink in your net
  • Can’t run Lankinen too much
  • Was never a consideration to play Lankinen back-to-back

Then need to flip Silovs and Tolopilo.....at least they need to see what they have in the system.

Unfortunately there are goalies who can be career backups, and those who just can't. It takes a special mind-set to sit on the bench for two weeks, and then come in cold and perform.

DeSmith proved he could do it.....and Lankinen has made a career of it. But Silovs just may not be that guy.

With goalies with a minimum of 4 games played this year, Silovs before today was allowing ~1.4 goals more than expected per 60, which was 2nd worse in the NHL behind Tampa's backup (1.8).

Today's game will do him no favors, though I doubt he gets to number 1.

For those wondering, Lankinen and Silovs have about the same expected GAA at 2.55.

By the analytics the team is one of the stingiest in the league, but as we all know that's coming at the cost of offense in the bottom 4 given no one can move the puck up to the forwards.

uh. that was a frustrating one. just needed one more save.

if that's the worst of the Canucks goaltending situation i suppose you just have to take it. Not like much more can be done to effectively cover Demko's absence than what has already been done.

Silovs is 23. He's waiver eligible, some seasoning in Abbottsford and he'll be fine. Or we'll be fine. Unfortunately he's not ready to be an NHL regular.

Myers is just so so bad. I can't believe we extended him for THREE seasons! Assuming he finish his contract here, that is NINE seasons he plays with the Canucks. The thought of it makes me want to puke.

the hockey gods always do this to the canucks. yah hronek aint playing. desharnais your up. silovs is f***ing garbage. needs another year in the AHL. call up the topolio to backup lanks.

Hughes Hronek

Soucy Myers
Juulsen Brannstrom

Silovs

After the top two players, it turns to crap rather quickly.

Although he'll be rusty, Demko couldn't come back quick enough.
This defense looks like it should have Gudbranson and Sbisa added as the 5th and 6th defenseman. I really hope Allvin has something up his sleeve to upgrade this dreadful defense.

Beautiful goal by Hughes, and a nice push at the end, but this team won't win with this lower tier defense. It's atrocious.
i think sbisa and guddy be better than juulssen/myers/soucy.

Looks like just based on raw numbers Silovs is battling for worst back-up in the league right now.

Just f***ing brutal. I feel for the kid because he's obviously not ready and way over his head.

Pius Suter has had a really nice start to the year. He was all over the PK today, and that’s not even considering the goal he scored. What a good depth add he was.

I mentioned this before. "Pew" is a guy I see as breaking out with a career year goal wise. Last year I saw him miss so many scoring opportunities. I probably haven't seen a player miss that many golden scoring opportunities here since Klatt with the Sedins.
