IMO - Oilers getting another buttery soft PP to start the third, followed by still another, gave them the opening to take the momentum.
But, the collapse after the 4-2 goal was inexcusable, and at that point, the Oilers simply looked hungry and the Canucks looked like they wanted to go home.
Really question throwing Juulsen in tonight. He got badly burned on multiple occasions. Bains’ hustle on the fourth line likely would have gone further than Juulsen getting caught out of position or turnstiled. And I like Juulsen. Going with 7D and 11F is also just baffling. Some weird personnel decisions in the last 24 hours.
For all the talk about Petey, Miller looked dreadful. And Hughes had a rare night where he wasn’t superhuman.
Thought Petey and Hronek had good nights. Sherwood also hustled his bag off.
Lankinen looked human tonight. A number of goals he’d probably like back. Great streaks always seem to end in brutal fashion, and that was true for him tonight.
Anyway - flush that one away and onto the next one. Biggest positive here was Petey continuing to look more like himself. But for f***s sake, would it kill this team to have both him and Miller going at the same time?

Yup that third got shitty fast. Gotta love the refs not calling the obvious trip on hughes but turning around and giving one for the trip on mcdavid.

I had a bad feeling about this one when Garland was tripped by McDavid no call. Yet McDavid gets a iffy hold by Hughes automatic call, score on the powerplay. Late 2nd, RNH trips Hughes no call, but the 3rd starts and McDavid gets a stick between his skates penalty. The best forward in the game gets every call, while the reigning Norris winner gets nothing.
Aman, Juulsen, Desharnais are not NHL caliber players, put them all on waivers. Time for Allvin to get a true 2nd pairing defenseman.

Miller with an xG% of 4% tonight. Not sure I’ve ever seen a number that low before. Juulsen and Aman not much better at 6% and 8%, respectively.

Juulsen has played 4 games this season:
The loss to an awful Philly team, the loss to Tampa, and the blowouts to NJ and Edmonton. Probably our 4 worst games of the season.
When we make a move for a defenceman we have to include Juulsen as a body going back.

Truly horrendous refereeing cost us this one. Canucks had the run of play at 5 on 5 with the score within 3 goals.
To their credit the Oilers generated a lot on the PP, which was largely thanks to some very good work bringing the puck to the net and crashing it. They also got some lucky bounces on the longer ES shots that went in. Some borderline goalie interference on both of the PP goals (I am counting the first goal), with McDavid and then Hyman tieing up Lankinen's stick. The towering defensemen on the back end have to do a better job of protecting the crease on those sorts of plays.
In general this was a very close checking game and there was a ton of stickwork by the Oilers that went uncalled.
I cannot fathom how you can view the first 2 minutes of the game as an Oilers fan and still think there is some sort of bias against your team (as their GDT claims). Very weak penalty on Hughes followed by a blatant missed call on Garland resulting in the first goal.
The penalty to start the third was comical too. McDavid steps on Myers' stick and draws the call where minutes earlier no call when Hughes is taken down in almost identical fashion.
Those calls swing the other way and so does the game IMO.

Miller is having a rough start to the year. Not much unlike the horrendous start a few years ago but he's lucky that Pettersson has been taking all of the heat so far. He looks like a shell of the dominant force we saw for all of last season. Not skating, not hitting, not covering his checks, not good enough.
