In management's defence, I don't think they had a choice. They couldn't find a trade clearly and they'd be raked over the coals even more if they let him walk for nothing. If you can't trade a player of his calibre then you've got to sign him. If he was a worse calibre of player then obviously the smart move is to let him walk.
