Finland went trough 10 years of almost not at all producet NHL players (outside goalies), exactly like Slovakia. Then the whole system was changed and based more on individual skill, and we're starting to see results just as lately as in the last 5 years or so, actually just now starting to show more. It's not impossible for Slovakia, neither.

Some one mentioned gear is expensive for hockey. They should do some slovakian hockey mark. I remember Finland having multiple stick makers like Koho and I think titan too, and some other, and they also made other gear. When American import gear is expensive for lower income countries, then they should make their own gear trademark. This happens even in technology-business, like computers, phones ect. You see different makers in Asia for example. Earlier dacedes you basically never saw imported sticks ect here.

Problem is that the crisis in CZ and SK hockey already lasts for quite a long time and results of rebuilding are still quite insignificant. Both schools look struggling with finding good methodology or points where they should focus more. Other top nations still look two steps ahead of CZ or slovaks. Neither money or lack of players is a problem imo. Its just lack of general system and bit of twisted enviroment. For example czechs were criticized for not having any Ds so they they have produced some 1st 2nd round draft Ds recently but, on the other hand, no forwards in the same time. They still look they are not able to put it all together and, unfortunately, they are going even backwards in some cases, such as too many teams in junior leagues (because of private interests) etc.

The difference between Fin/SWE and CZE/SK is that when FIN/SWE realized they were ****ed up, they started working hard and professional together to change it. However this is exactly not a case of czech and slovak hockey where 10 people started, other 10 criticize them, 30 doing nothing and 7 doing exactly opposite. We live in the country where national coach is suited for bribery, media basically staying behind him, guy who gave money to the coach to keep his son in a team appeared to be even bigger idiot and everything is constantly somehow blury here. A lot of people pretend that its hard to find a way from it even if FIN/SWE found it pretty fast. And this is because it is very comfortable for them.... Its hard to imagine that this enviroment can exists in the country which is able to prepare biggest WC in the history with massive income and big support from fanbase.

The fact that Ehlers (Denmark) did not get the invite to the Europe Team will come back to haunt this tourney. Ehlers played excellent in the second half of his rookie season, and is poised for a breakout season for the Jets. It is a shame he was left off the team, as he will likely be a top 6 forward for his career.

It's really too bad they never get to play together. Can't qualify to the Olympics because qualifiers are mid season, won't get a spot for World Cup because the results aren't there, still got players in the NHL playoffs when it's the World Champs. By far the nation that hurts the most from how the international schedule is formed.

Yikes, I never had seen what the Danish team could truly be. Really does suck they cant get it all together at once.

Denmark playing their first game in Olympic qualifying...
Line up will be

Mikkel Bødker - Frans Nielsen - Nicklas Jensen
Oliver Bjorkstrand - Peter Regin - Nikolaj Ehlers
Nichlas Hardt - Morten Madsen - Jannik Hansen
Mads Christensen - Morten Green - Frederik Storm
Mathias Bau

Backs

Philip Larsen, Jesper B. Jensen
Oliver Lauridsen, Daniel Nielsen
Stefan Lassen, Markus Lauridsen
Nicholas B. Jensen, Emil Kristensen

Goalies: Frederik Andersen with Sebastian Dahm as backup

I don't think it's a given NHLers are allowed to participate in that event...is it?
They are allowed..everybody but Lars Eller is in Minsk for the first qualifier against Belarus in 3 hours and 15 minutes....

Hoping to see them in Olympics of possible

We won't know tomorrow if we are going to the Olympics but if we lose tonight we probably know we are not going.

Not a single player would make team Sweden.

So.

No.
How many members of the 2002 Belarus Olympic team would have made Sweden's team?
I can provide a link to that quarter-finals highlights, if you like.
All kidding aside, it should be the 8 best countries in the world, per IIHF rankings, period. This circus of "Team Euro" and "Team NA Kids" ruins the "best on best" concept, IMO.

Currently, top 8 are:

Canada
Russia
Finland
USA
Sweden
Czech Republic
Switzerland
Slovakia

I would watch any game between any 2 of those teams.

It's a pity the Olympic tournament has this pre-qualification nonsense. Four groups of four teams would be fine. It would allow Denmark for instance to show up given that their best players have often been unable to play in this qualification circus.

The Olympics exposure would further drive the increasing awareness and popularity of the sport in Denmark. Which is what the whole thing should be about. To grow ice hockey globally. Who cares about the piddling fake WCOH ?

I think that 16 teams in an Olympic Tournament might be pushing it. It would lead to very poor ice conditions considering the amount of games that would have to be played (don't forget the women would most likely play in the same arenas too). Why not just allot all 12 spots based on IIHF ranking (with no automatic home team inclusion when hosted in countries like South Korea and China)? Wouldn't that be more fair and a better overall indication of the team's general ability and placement, as apposed to their luck in one three game qualification tournament in the summer?

And unfortunately as we saw today, it doesn't look like Denmark's best players made all too much of a difference. They're the ones hoping for that lucky bounce now, despite being the best team in their pool by a considerable margin (on paper at least).

There would be fewer games overall (I wouldn't have any placings games after the group stage). 38 versus 32 with four groups of four. I feel for Denmark. First of all they cannot get their best players for qualification to Sochi. Now they can they are a bit out of shape coming up against teams who have players already in league competition.

They have effectively been penalized for their own success. And despite what the NHL prattles on about the biggest global audience for ice hockey is the Winter Olympiad. It's how I first watched the sport as a small child.

And Denmark couldnt even get themself a OG spot.

Switzerland and Slovakia should have been team 7 and 8.

Well, at least we would be the more fun team to look at, because we got no defence and all offence. Also, it would have been great if the players werent playing olympic q so long before seeing the ice in the nhl, but i guess its the same for everyone.
