Proposal: Giroux - Tavares UFA Rights Swap

Senators don't need a center, Leafs (probably) do need a center, Giroux doesn't want to leave Ottawa, Tavares doesn't want to leave Toronto.

Obviously a lot can change with Tavares and the Leafs depending on the playoff outcome. I very much doubt Giroux would move on from the Senators no matter what happens in April/May.

Weird proposal that doesn't make sense for anyone involved.

UFA Rights Swap

WTF is that? The U stands for Unrestricted! There are no rights!?!

Am I missing something?

Yes. Teams (sometimes) trade their UFA rights prior to these players becoming free agents on July 1st.

Rarely do they trade they players for each other though, and this specific scenario is extra unbelievable because of what's been said in this thread.

Reactions: Sens With Benefits
I think Giroux's just gonna take one year deals in Ottawa until he's had enough hockey. Ottawa has always been his adopted hometown, he built his dream home up there and he's up to like 3 sons now. He's chilling and being a dad and probably enjoying being on a young, improving team that will give him a few more cracks at the playoffs. He might go another 3 years for all we know.
Exactly. Buddy grew up here from age 11/12 onwards and spent all his summers here. Absolutely loved the bars in Ottawa back in the day lol.

You know the point of the UFA rights trade is to get the 8th year right? These guys are too old to get the 8th year so whats the point?

Tavares has taken a lot of crap like the rest of the core but he is still a #1 center. Giroux is barely an NHL player and don't you Ottawa fans even try and argue that with me we know.

52pt pace and leading the league in faceoff% is "barely an NHL player" now.

Good thing you don't have any more credibility to lose or else this would be a bad look...

Tavares would be #1 C on the sens
Now that Stutzle is likely to make the playoffs, I sure hope he has better playoff performances than Tavares.

Then again, it would be hard to be worse.

Johnny T's production falls from nearly a point per game in the regular season to 46 points in 62 playoff games. He has a 2-7 playoff series record, bad, but certainly better than Auston Matthews' 1-8 (Sens have won 2 playoff series during the Auston Matthews era). You could say JT is the consummate Leaf, but slightly less of a choker.
