Claude Giroux UFA Rights - Signs for $5,500,000 x 1 M-NTC (15 teams)

:sens

John Tavares UFA Rights - Signs for $8,000,000 x 2 NMC

Toronto gets a cheaper RW that can provide leadership and replace a portion of Marner's outgoing production if he walks. Also would replace his PK1 role with Kampf. Toronto saves some cap space to bolster their middle 6.

Ottawa gets a 2C that can play under Cozens and allow Pinto to play RW. Or shift to LW and allow Stutzle back to the middle and Cozens to play 2RW. Ottawa spends a little bit more $$$ for increased production.

Ultimately there is no reason to make a UFA Rights swap when you can just wait till July 1st but it's fun to think about.

Teams have acquired rights for UFA that costs a mid/ lat round pick.

What you suggest might Might be more

rights for A and 6 th for rights for B and a 5 th

I can't see Giroux leaving now that the Sens have finally turned the corner.

The way I view him being unsigned right now is that he doesn't need to sign in season because of his status with the team, and at his age maybe waiting until the offseason gives him more clarity about what he wants to do.

I also think that Tavares will get way more than Ottawa wants to pay. It doesn't matter that he is past his prime. It will be similar to Stamkos hitting free agency where Tavares being a shade under 35 makes it easier to give him a ridiculous contract because a team can get the benefits that 35+ rules looked to prevent without the risks.

If I'm Ottawa, I'm hanging up the phone, blocking all numbers from Toronto and changing my phone number. That's how paranoid I would be.

I mean it's clear that Tavares is currently the better player, albeit 3 years at this age makes a massive difference. Giroux at 34 was significantly better than he is now.

The proposal itself makes virtually no sense in any shape though. Not only does neither team do this, neither player does this.

I think Giroux's just gonna take one year deals in Ottawa until he's had enough hockey. Ottawa has always been his adopted hometown, he built his dream home up there and he's up to like 3 sons now. He's chilling and being a dad and probably enjoying being on a young, improving team that will give him a few more cracks at the playoffs. He might go another 3 years for all we know.

Tavares is by far the better player at this point. I'd definitely keep JT over Giroux personally but I could never see this happening. Both players are where they want to be and would make it work to stay contract wise

Tavares has taken a lot of crap like the rest of the core but he is still a #1 center. Giroux is barely an NHL player and don't you Ottawa fans even try and argue that with me we know.

He'd be 6th on the Leafs in scoring.

He's also 1st in the entire NHL in faceoff winning percentage with a 61.4%.

He's been force fed to the top line in Ottawa that is why. He clearly belongs no where near an NHL team top 6 but he is a Vet who will get minutes for years beyond he should

He still has a lot to contribute.

I can understand your skepticism since none of the vets you guys ever acquire are any good.

I mean that is just not true but let's not derail the thread with that. You can lie if you want I get it, we all do on the mainboards at times but I know how good Giroux has actually been for you guys (and you do too).

He can't sniff Tavares at this point

Why wouldn't Toronto just spend 2.5M more and just get the better producing player? I think they can find a way to make it work rather than swapping and then paying 5.5M for Giroux. For all the crap Tavares has gotten, he's only had 3 season where he didn't produce 25 goals. 2 were because of games played, and 1 was his rookie season.

Tavares will sign with the Leafs for a discount. Only ? is obviously Marner. If they lock him up ($12-14) and give Tavares, lets say $7-8M, that basically removes them for a potential McDavid sweepstakes which will cost minimum $15, probably more like $17.

Older players that joined a team because it is their hometown, where they currently live don't typically leave such places.

This proposal makes no sense at all.

Besides, Sens have their centre position spoken for. Stutzle-Cozens-Pinto. They won't be trying to acquire a centre except for the 4th line.
